Audi’s old naming system has made a return
In the first concept, pure EVs were given the numbers 2, 4, 6, and 8, while ICE-powered vehicles, SUVs, and plug-in hybrids were given the numbers 1, 3, 5, and 7. Upon the announcement of this nomenclature, Oliver Hoffmann, Audi's head of technology at the time, defended the strategy by claiming that it would establish a "clear and intuitive distinction" between drivetrain types.
Due to this decision, Audi's model naming scheme underwent significant changes. The A4 sedan was renamed the A5 for the current generation model. At launch, the A6 car was supposed to be called the A7.
A7 Sedan to be renamed as A6 on global debut
The new Audi A7 sedan, which is scheduled to make its global debut on March 4, will now be known as the A6 due to the reversal of the naming pattern. The A6 e-Tron will remain the name of the electric model that was previously unveiled.
Even though the new A4 and A5 are essentially the same vehicle with different powertrains, Audi has said that it has no intentions to change the nomenclature of the models that are currently available in some markets. This is because, according to the updated system, the A5 is a physically larger car than the A4, and the numbers 1 through 8 represent the vehicle's size and hierarchy within the Audi range, regardless of powertrain type.
Conclusion
Audi stated that current models, such as the electric Q4 and Q6, will continue to be known by their current names for the same reason. Numbers and letters will still be used to identify Audi models, with 'A' standing for conventional vehicles and 'Q' for SUVs.
