Audi A5 to get a new PHEV powertrain

The updated Audi A5, which debuted last July 2024 with petrol and diesel units, now gets a fresh plug-in hybrid powertrain. The plug-in hybrid variant of the A5 features a new 'e-hybrid' nomenclature and is available in both sedan and estate body shapes. The updated Audi A5 lineup replaced the A4 sedan worldwide last year.

Propelling the A5 e-hybrid is a 2.0-litre, four-cylinder turbo-petrol unit that alone develops 252 hp, and it is mated to an electric motor (located inside the gearbox) that develops 142 hp.

Combined total output is offered in two states of tune on both the sedan and estate: 300 hp/450Nm and 367hp/500Nm. Both are offered with a 7-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

Effective Powertrain

The A5 e-hybrid receives a 25.9 kWh battery pack, which permits up to 110km of pure electric driving. It supports AC charging at up to 11kW, which recharges the battery from 0 to 100 percent in 2.5 hours.

Audi says it has optimized the regenerative braking too, the extent of which can be set by paddle shifters on the steering wheel. There are two drive modes available: EV and hybrid. In hybrid mode, the hybrid management system keeps a certain level of charge to reserve enough for later use.

Exterior and Interior Highlights

Apart from an e-hybrid badge on the front fender, visually, the PHEV A5 variants are the same as the regular variants, as is the equipment list. The A5 e-hybrid Quattro with the higher output comes with the S line and black exterior styling as standard. The interior MMI panoramic display, including the 11.9-inch digital driver display and a 14.5-inch infotainment touchscreen, has been retained as well.

10 new Audi PHEVs in the pipeline

The A5 is one of ten new PHEVs due from the German firm across its range. This will be followed by the production of PHEV versions of the A3, A6, Q5 and next-generation Q3. The next Q7 and the larger Q9 (as it's now being called) will also be equipped with PHEV power when they go on sale in the not-too-distant future.

Conclusion

With the addition of a plug-in hybrid powertrain in the Audi A5, Audi’s strategy for electrification has advanced significantly. The A5 e-hybrid achieves an admirable equilibrium between efficiency and performance, thanks to its impressive electric-only range of 110 km, powerful dual-source output, and advanced hybrid management. The A5 PHEV, while preserving its sophisticated design and high-end features, presents purchasers with an attractive option compared to conventional combustion engines. Audi is bolstering its dedication to a more electrified future by planning to roll out several additional PHEV models throughout its lineup, all while preserving its signature driving dynamics and luxury allure.
