Union Budget 2024 Makes No Comments On Evs

Union Budget 2024 makes NO Comments on EVs

Nirmala Sitharaman, the Finance Minister of India has announced the Union Budget for the year 2024-25 today focusing on job creation, women's empowerment, and skill development. Industry leaders welcome employment schemes and funding for education but express disappointment over the lack of targeted EV sector measures. This omission has left some industry leaders disappointed.

Support for MSMEs and Skill Development

One of the highlights of the budget was the emphasis on supporting MSMEs and addressing the skill shortage in the workforce. Mukesh Taneja, CEO and Co-Founder of GT FORCE praised the government's initiative to assist MSMEs through credit guarantee schemes, particularly those in the manufacturing sector. The budget also proposed the establishment of 1,000 industrial training centers, which are aimed at addressing the skill shortage in the workforce. Taneja acknowledged these steps as creating a solid foundation for growth and development.

However, Taneja also pointed out that the budget did not increase allocations for expanding EV charging infrastructure, which he views as a crucial element in fostering consumer confidence in electric vehicles. He emphasized the need for further actions to boost EV adoption and position India as a leader in the global electric mobility sector. The lack of focus on this aspect was seen as a missed opportunity to drive the EV industry forward.

Emphasis on Job Creation and Women’s Empowerment

Kunal Arya, Co-Founder and Managing Director of ZELIO appreciated the budget's focus on job creation in the manufacturing sector. The introduction of a new employment-linked scheme and the significant allocation of ₹2 lakh crore for education, employment, and skilling initiatives were welcomed by Arya. He commended the incentives for employing first-time workers and the increased funding for women's empowerment, highlighting these steps as crucial for fostering a more inclusive and diverse workforce.

Despite these positive measures, Arya expressed disappointment over the lack of targeted measures for the EV sector. He pointed out that more funding for EV charging infrastructure is essential for building consumer confidence and accelerating EV adoption. Arya emphasized that the government needs to address the infrastructure challenges to support the growth of the EV industry.

Industry Leaders’ Reactions

The overall reaction from industry leaders to the Union Budget 2024 has been one of mixed emotions. While there is a general appreciation for the measures aimed at supporting MSMEs, job creation, and women's empowerment, the lack of focus on the EV industry has left many feeling disappointed. The industry leaders believe that for India to become a global leader in electric mobility, there needs to be a stronger emphasis on developing the necessary infrastructure and providing targeted support to the EV sector.

The absence of specific announcements for the EV industry has raised concerns about the government’s commitment to promoting electric mobility. Industry experts have highlighted the importance of expanding the EV charging infrastructure, providing incentives for EV adoption, and supporting the development of EV technology. These steps are seen as essential to fostering consumer confidence and accelerating the transition to electric vehicles.

In conclusion, the Union Budget 2024 has introduced several commendable measures aimed at supporting MSMEs, job creation, and women's empowerment. However, the lack of specific announcements for the EV industry has left some industry leaders disappointed. The budget's emphasis on skill development and employment schemes is seen as a positive step towards fostering economic growth and creating a more inclusive workforce.

Nevertheless, for India to achieve its goal of becoming a global leader in electric mobility, there needs to be a stronger focus on developing the necessary infrastructure and providing targeted support to the EV sector. The industry leaders hope that future budgets will address these concerns and take concrete steps to promote the growth and adoption of electric vehicles in the country.
