India’s SUV market is evolving, with hybrid powertrains becoming an attractive choice for buyers who want better fuel economy without giving up on performance.
Between 2025 and 2026, several well-known carmakers plan to roll out hybrid SUVs designed to strike that balance. These vehicles reflect a growing shift toward sustainability while maintaining the premium and rugged appeal that Indian drivers value.
Toyota Fortuner MHEV
Toyota is preparing to update its popular Fortuner with mild-hybrid technology. The refreshed version will use the current 2.8L diesel engine combined with a 48V hybrid system. This setup will deliver roughly 201 bhp and 500 Nm of torque while improving mileage by around 5%.
Instead of a complete redesign, the Fortuner MHEV will likely retain its current look but gain subtle feature enhancements and possibly exclusive badging to highlight its hybrid credentials.
Honda ZR-V Hybrid
Expected to launch by late 2025 or early 2026, the Honda ZR-V Hybrid will introduce a more urban-friendly crossover option in the hybrid SUV space. It’s expected to come with a 2.0L petrol engine supported by two electric motors. The result is a power output of around 180bhp and 315Nm of torque. The ZR-V will likely be offered with an eCVT gearbox, targeting city dwellers who prioritize comfort and fuel economy with the flexibility of a modern compact SUV.
Kia Seltos Hybrid (Next Gen)
Kia is set to launch the next-generation Seltos in 2026, and for the first time, it will include a hybrid powertrain alongside petrol and diesel options. The hybrid version may feature a 1.6L petrol engine paired with an electric motor. Design changes inspired by the Kia EV5 concept will give it a more futuristic look, and the interior is rumored to include a 30-inch panoramic display and features like rear ventilated seats. This update will modernize the car’s appearance and expand its appeal among young, tech-savvy buyers.
Maruti Fronx Strong Hybrid
Maruti Suzuki, known for its practical and efficient cars, is also joining the hybrid game with a strong-hybrid version of the Fronx. Expected to hit the roads in 2026, it will be powered by a 1.2L 3-cylinder Z-Series petrol engine paired with a full-hybrid setup developed in-house. The car is rumored to offer over 35 kmpl in mileage, making it one of the most fuel-efficient options in the segment. Visually, it might remain similar to the current model with the addition of hybrid badging.
Mahindra XUV3XO Hybrid
Mahindra’s upcoming XUV3XO Hybrid, expected around 2026, marks the brand’s first foray into hybrid technology. It will use a 1.2L turbo petrol engine mated to a hybrid unit and is expected to compete directly with the future Maruti Brezza hybrid. While Mahindra is known for its rugged diesel-powered SUVs, this move shows a broader effort to appeal to a more environmentally conscious buyer without losing the core identity of its vehicles.
These five SUVs highlight how leading automakers are adapting to changing consumer needs, combining efficient technology with the performance Indian drivers have come to expect. Whether it’s Toyota’s trusted Fortuner or Maruti’s budget-friendly Fronx, hybrid SUVs are set to become an important part of India’s automotive future.
