Skoda Auto has begun exploring compressed natural gas engines to expand its car offerings in India. The growing CNG market in the country has motivated this decision.
The company has avoided giving a specific timeline for launching these models. This shows a shift in its engine strategy since competitors are making strong efforts to bring more CNG vehicles into their portfolios.
CNG Push Guided by Market Needs
Skoda’s latest move shows a big shift unfolding in India’s automobile market. About a year ago when the company introduced the Skoda Kylaq, they mentioned they might explore CNG if enough customers seemed interested.
Fast forward to now, that interest has become impossible to miss. Companies like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, Tata, and Toyota now sell CNG options even in their more expensive cars.
Take Tata Motors as an example. They launched a CNG version of their turbocharged Nexon, proving that natural gas and turbo engines could perform well under Indian driving conditions. This has opened the door for Skoda and others to consider offering similar alternatives.
Skoda Kylaq: Is This the Start of Eco-Friendly Driving?
Skoda could introduce the Kylaq SUV if it decides to proceed with its CNG projects. It uses a 1.0-liter TSI petrol engine that generates 118 bhp and 175 Nm of torque.
In its CNG model, power might be reduced to 100 bhp and torque to 160 Nm. This kind of drop is typical in cars equipped with CNG systems from the factory.
The performance might dip , and the added weight of the CNG tank could make a difference. Still, the Kylaq CNG might catch the eye of those looking to save on fuel while keeping a stylish look.
No Confirmations Yet, But the Hints Are Strong
Skoda has not said when it plans to launch, but this move seems possible because of rising fuel prices and stiff competition. A factory-built CNG option by a premium European brand like Skoda could appeal to urban drivers looking to save on fuel expenses without compromising on safety or quality.
With better infrastructure and shifting preferences among buyers, a Skoda CNG model could turn into a real option in the near future.
