The Maruti Ignis is being phased out after nine years, with dealer stocks drying up and most outlets no longer accepting new orders.
Poor sales figures relative to rivals, minimal product updates and a limited safety package are cited as key reasons for its quiet exit.
A Silent End, With No Official Word From Maruti
Maruti Suzuki has silently wound up production of the Ignis hatchback, according to dealer sources. Only a handful of dealers across the country still hold limited stock, and most have stopped accepting new orders. The carmaker was approached for an official statement but had not responded at the time of writing.
It is a rather undramatic farewell for a car that arrived with considerable fanfare back in 2017, positioning itself as something a little different within Maruti's Nexa premium retail channel.
Nine Years on Sale, One Facelift, and a Diesel That Did Not Last
The Ignis was first launched in January 2017 and retailed through the Nexa channel. Despite its crossover-inspired aesthetics, which usually appeal to Indian buyers, the Ignis failed to generate significant interest.
At launch, it was offered with two engine options: the 83hp 1.2-litre K-series petrol and the 75hp 1.3-litre DDiS diesel. The diesel was discontinued in 2018 due to low demand. What followed was nearly a decade of modest sales, with the product receiving precious little investment in return.
In the nine years it was on sale, the Ignis received only one major update in the form of a mid-lifecycle facelift in 2020, apart from a minor safety upgrade in 2019. For a car operating in a fiercely competitive segment, that level of product inactivity was always going to be costly.
Sales Numbers That Tell the Whole Story
The figures below make the picture rather clear. Sales peaked in 2022 following the facelift, but the recovery was short-lived.
Year
Units Sold
2017
48,425
2018
43,602
2019
22,140
2020
27,200
2021
32,735
2022
51,176
2023
38,318
2024
26,860
2025
27,900
Sales peaked in 2022 with 51,176 units, but that was far fewer than the similarly priced Swift, which sold 1,76,424 units in the same period. More recently, monthly sales dipped below the 2,000-unit mark in the final months.
Safety Shortcomings and the Absence of CNG Hurt Its Case Further
The Ignis was one of just two Marutis still on sale with only two airbags as standard, even as the carmaker updated the rest of its lineup to six airbags through 2025. It was also one of the very few Maruti products never offered with a factory-fitted CNG kit. In a market increasingly driven by both safety awareness and fuel economy, these were significant disadvantages.
What Comes Next for the Nexa Entry Slot
The Ignis is still listed on Maruti's website with prices ranging between Rs 5.35 lakh and Rs 7.55 lakh (ex-showroom), continuing to hold its place as the most affordable model in the Nexa lineup. However, with stocks nearly exhausted, that listing may not hold for much longer.
Maruti is unlikely to revive the Ignis nameplate, although a spiritual successor could arrive in the form of the upcoming Y43 sub-compact SUV, positioned as a direct rival to the Hyundai Exter and Tata Punch. Its story closely mirrors that of the Ciaz, another Maruti model that saw minimal updates before being gradually phased out.
