Land Rover is launching its flagship off-road vehicle, the Defender Octa, in India. The ultra-luxury variant of the Defender family, the Defender Octa, delivers the utmost of the brand's off-road ability with luxury and high technology.
The Defender Octa is powered by a mighty 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine that produces 626 horsepower and 750 Nm of torque, the most powerful ever produced by a Defender. The engine enables the rugged SUV to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 4 seconds despite its huge size and weight.
What sets the Octa apart is actually its groundbreaking 6D Dynamics suspension system. Whereas conventional designs take advantage of hydraulic interlinks among the four corners of a car, the advanced system takes advantage of such interlinks to allow unparalleled body control and wheel articulation. The system actively fights body roll during cornering while simultaneously optimizing wheel travel in severe off-road use.
The Octa name, based on the octahedron, an eight-sided geometry, represents the SUV's performance in eight performance categories. Land Rover claims the vehicle excels in speed, power, torque, handling, articulation, suspension travel, wading depth, and approach angles and hence is the ultimate luxury all-terrain vehicle.
Aesthetically, the Defender Octa stands out with only-for-Octa 22-inch forged alloy wheels, wider wheel arches, a unique front bumper with wider air intakes, and quad exhaust tips. The car also comes with distinctive "Octa" badging and in unique color schemes.
Inside, the cabin is very upscale with Semi-Aniline leather trim, open-pore wood, and a 13.1-inch curved infotainment screen powering the latest Pivi Pro system. The digital instrument cluster offers configurable off-road information screens, and the Meridian Signature Sound System offers luxury sound performance.
The Defender Octa will need to be priced significantly higher than the standard Defender V8, thus becoming a halo car for the brand in India. While Land Rover has not yet revealed its launch dates and prices, market sources suggest the car will enter the country through the CBU (Completely Built Unit) import route in the early stages, and bookings will be initiated as early as mid-2025.
Land Rover's launch of the Octa in India is indicative of the rising importance of India's premium SUV market, whereby ultra-premium off-roaders have attracted an increasing number of buyers among enthusiasts and high-net-worth buyers seeking vehicles that offer prestige through actual capability. The official India show event is likely to feature the rugged off-road ability of the vehicle by means of a specially crafted track to demonstrate the capability of the 6D Dynamics system on different challenging terrains. The Defender Octa will face stiff competition from other ultra-luxury off-roaders such as the Mercedes-Benz G 63 AMG and the Lexus LX in the Indian market.
