India Car Sales March 2026: Maruti Leads, Tata and Mahindra Surge, Dzire Tops the Charts

India's passenger vehicle market closed the 2025-26 financial year with a commanding performance, totalling 4,47,702 units in March 2026, a robust 16.03% jump over the same month last year. Maruti Suzuki held its ground at the summit, while Tata Motors and Mahindra posted blistering growth. On the model charts, the Maruti Dzire reclaimed top spot, narrowly edging out the Tata Punch and Nexon in a fiercely competitive month that underlined the enduring dominance of SUVs and compact cars across India.

• India's passenger vehicle market dispatched 4,47,702 units in March 2026, with brand-wise rankings confirming Maruti, Tata, Mahindra, Hyundai, and Toyota in the top five, and Renault and Nissan posting the highest year-on-year growth rates of all OEMs.

• The Maruti Dzire emerged as India's best-selling car of the month with 21,224 units, topping a competitive list that included the Tata Punch, Nexon, Hyundai Creta, and a resurgent Kia Sonet that surged nearly 55.90% year-on-year.

India's passenger vehicle market recorded total dispatches of 4,47,702 units in March 2026, a 16.03% year-on-year increase over 3,85,860 units sold in March 2025. On a month-on-month basis, sales also rose 6.44% from 4,20,613 units in February 2026.

Growth was broad-based, driven by strong SUV demand, improved rural sentiment, and multiple new product interventions across segments.

Financial year-end dynamics played their customary role, with automakers pushing dispatches to close FY2025-26 on a high. The result was one of the strongest March performances India's car market has seen in years, with nearly every major brand reporting healthy year-on-year gains.

Brand-by-Brand Sales Performance, Who Moved the Needle

Maruti Suzuki Holds the Crown with 1,66,219 Units

Maruti Suzuki retained its leadership position with 1,66,219 units, registering 10.27% year-on-year growth. The compact segment spanning the Baleno, Swift, Dzire, Wagon R and Celerio remained a volume pillar, while the SUV range including the Brezza, Grand Vitara, Fronx and the newly introduced e Vitara continued to attract strong demand. On a month-on-month basis, Maruti grew 3.24% over February 2026.

Tata Motors Posts 28% Growth, Holds Second Spot

Tata Motors followed with 66,192 units, posting a strong 28.24% year-on-year growth, the fastest expansion among the top three brands. The Nexon and Punch remained the twin pillars of Tata's volume story, with both models placing in the top three on the individual model charts.

Mahindra Crosses 60,000 Units on the Strength of SUVs

Mahindra recorded 60,272 units with a 25.44% year-on-year increase, continuing its remarkable run in the SUV segment. The Scorpio N, Thar, Thar Roxx, and newer arrivals such as the XUV 7XO are driving consistent volumes. The full financial year concluded with all-time-high volumes of 6,60,276 SUVs, representing 20% year-on-year growth.

Hyundai, Toyota and Kia, Steady Performers with Record Quarterly Numbers

Hyundai reported 55,064 units, a 6.26% year-on-year increase, supported by the Creta, Venue, and i20. The brand also achieved its highest-ever quarterly domestic sales of 1,66,578 units in Q4 FY2025-26.

Toyota rounded off the top five with 35,168 units at 23.95% growth, with the Innova Hycross, Urban Cruiser Hyryder and Fortuner as key contributors.

Kia posted 29,112 units, up 14.05%, driven by the new-generation Seltos and the Sonet.

Renault and Nissan Lead the Growth Table Across All OEMs

Renault and Nissan were the fastest-growing brands in March 2026, surging 77.30% and 76.39% year-on-year to 5,046 and 4,408 units, respectively.

Citroen also posted triple-digit growth of 100.25% to 815 units, albeit from a low base. Skoda grew a steady 6.82% to 7,928 units, while Honda was up 4.94% to 7,585 units, and MG Motor recorded 6,528 units with 18.67% growth.

Top 25 Cars, New Launches Make an Immediate Impact

The top 25 cars in March 2026 recorded a combined 3,34,794 units, a strong 24.99% year-on-year growth over 2,67,866 units in March 2025.

New entrants such as the Maruti Victoris, Mahindra XUV 7XO, and Tata Sierra made an immediate impact, signalling strong buyer appetite for fresh products. Toyota Hyryder was among the fastest-growing models further down the chart, surging 93.08% year-on-year.

The Maruti Swift declined 18.04% and the Tata Tiago fell 10.41%, reflecting the ongoing shift in buyer preference away from entry-level hatchbacks and towards SUVs. The data reinforces the growing dominance of utility vehicles, with a significant portion of the top 25 comprising SUVs or crossovers.

Reading the Market: Three Themes That Define March 2026

Three themes emerge clearly from this month's data. SUVs continue to dominate buying intent across price segments, from affordable compact crossovers to premium ladder-frame models. The rivalry between Tata Motors and Mahindra for second place behind Maruti is intensifying with each passing month, and that contest will shape how the rest of 2026 unfolds.

And finally, brands that have recently refreshed their line-ups, Kia with the new Seltos and Sonet, Renault with the updated Kiger and Triber, and Maruti with the Victoris, are clearly reaping the rewards in the sales charts.

With multiple product updates and new launches planned in the coming months, the momentum seen in March 2026 appears well-founded as the industry heads into the new financial year.
