- Electric car retail sales in India grew 107.75 percent year on year in June 2026, crossing 31,000 units.
- Tata Motors led the segment, while Mahindra posted the sharpest growth among top manufacturers.
India's electric car market kept up its impressive run through the middle of 2026. Retail registrations for the month of June stood at 31,823 units, according to the latest data from the Federation of Automobile Dealers Associations. That works out to growth of 107.75 percent over the 15,318 units sold in the same month last year, and a healthy 19.27 percent jump over the 26,682 units registered in May 2026.
For an industry that was still finding its feet just a couple of years ago, numbers like these suggest electric mobility in India has moved well past the early adopter phase.
Tata Motors Retains Its Lead As Mahindra Narrows The Gap
Tata Motors continued to dominate the charts with 12,187 units sold in June, translating to a market share of 38.30 percent. The homegrown manufacturer posted year on year growth of 126.73 percent, adding well over six thousand units compared to June last year, and its monthly sales climbed 17.86 percent over May.
Mahindra, however, was the real story of the month. The company sold 7,766 electric cars, growing 121.06 percent year on year and a striking 24.40 percent over the previous month, driven by continued demand for its Born Electric range.
JSW MG held on to third spot with 5,861 units, up 24.94 percent year on year and 17.60 percent over May, while Maruti Suzuki settled into fourth place with 1,919 units, growing 20.62 percent month on month as it built on the early momentum of its eVitara launch.
Smaller Players Show A Mixed Bag Of Results
Further down the table, VinFast retailed 1,404 units, up 13.41 percent over May, as the Vietnamese brand continued to widen its footprint across Indian showrooms.
BYD sold 873 units, a year on year rise of 51.30 percent and a monthly gain of 27.26 percent, and BMW more than doubled its year on year volumes with 497 units, climbing a sharp 41.19 percent over May alone. Kia kept pace with 449 units, up 28.65 percent month on month.
Hyundai was the notable exception to the month's upward trend, slipping to 352 units in June from 460 in May, a decline of 23.48 percent. Mercedes-Benz, by contrast, grew 12.50 percent to 234 units.
At the smaller end of the scale, Volvo rose 27.59 percent to 37 units, matched by Tesla, which also delivered 37 Model Y units for a smaller 5.71 percent gain.
Toyota made its debut on the electric passenger vehicle charts with 32 units following the launch of its Urban Cruiser Ebella, while Citroen added 24 units, up 9.09 percent. The "Others" category slipped 15.17 percent to 151 units.

Second Quarter Numbers Confirm A Broader Trend
The pattern held up over the wider April to June quarter as well. Total electric car retail sales for the quarter reached 82,011 units, up 88.69 percent from 43,464 units in the same period a year earlier.
Tata Motors led the quarter with 31,070 units, good for a 37.89 percent share, while Mahindra nearly doubled its own volumes with 19,389 units, a rise of 99.78 percent. JSW MG came in third with 15,851 units.
On a quarterly basis, Hyundai's sales fell 35.60 percent to 1,328 units, a steeper decline than its June monthly dip alone would suggest.
Electric Vehicles Now Account For A Growing Share Of The Market
Perhaps the most telling figure in the entire report is the one measuring overall adoption. Electric cars made up 7.75 percent of total passenger vehicle retail sales in June 2026, up from 6.63 percent in May and 4.80 percent in June last year. That steady climb points to electric power shifting from a niche choice to a mainstream one in the eyes of Indian car buyers, and if the current pace holds, the segment looks set for an even stronger second half of the year.
