Himachal Police to Fine Riders for Improper Helmet Usage

Police in Hamirpur have been threatening two-wheeler riders over their head coverages or solely good quality helmets. The following rules violation put the state and the North Eastern region in particular at a liberal side of the heavily attracting fines under the Motor Vehicles Act.

When the compulsory wearing of helmets by the riders of two-wheelers was violated in the region, the district police in Hamirpur, Himachal Pradesh state initiated a special drive. Those bikers who adopt a helmet that they don’t fasten, including the chin strap now fall under the MV Act. This campaign is targeting to raise awareness about helmet laws such that the bikers adhere to laws concerning helmets to reduce accidents and deaths.

What Riders Should Know

The police have said that having a helmet and just wearing it with no intention of using it for protection will not count. To avoid penalties, riders must:

  • Elliptical head and facial injuries specific to bicycle crash victims. Head and facial injuries sustained may include the following: Bicyclists must wear helmets properly mounted with the strap on the chin.

  • Wherever possible use good quality helmets, which have been certified by BIS (Bureau of Indian Standards).

  • It is strongly advised not to use helmets that are manufactured for other kinds of movement like cricket, construction etc.

Any rider whose head is not restrained by a correctly fastened helmet strap will be fined on the spot regardless of the attired helmet.

Police Campaign Details

ASP Rajesh Upadhyay in particular reiterated that the traffic police are determined for unsafe helmets. He urged two-wheeler riders to:

  • Most importantly, protect your head by using helmets that are safe to use in that they have passed through certification tests.

  • Helmets must be worn correctly by riders to fully reduce their likelihood of sustaining a head injury if involved in an accident.

Upadhyay said, “These days the district traffic police have launched a drive against the two-wheeler drivers who do not use helmets correctly or wear low-quality helmets. Passengers must put safety first, especially by wearing a helmet that has been certified and is secure.”

Why This Matters

Lack of compliance diminishes the usefulness of a helmet greatly and creates a dangerous situation in the case of an accident. The thought process behind the initiative by Hamirpur police is to educate and also sensitise the masses to prevent mishaps on roads.

Helmets of good quality and properly fastened can prevent riders from being fined for not using one and afford necessary safety on the roads.
