AWD Tata Harrier EVs Get Cheaper and What This Means for Purchasers

Tata Motors is getting ready to make the dual-motor QWD all-wheel-drive technology of the Harrier.EV more widely available by putting them on less expensive models. The decision was made in response to higher-than-anticipated demand for the AWD model, which, while being limited to the top-spec trim, currently accounts for almost one-third of the SUV's sales. Tata hopes to increase the availability of QWD vehicles so that more consumers can benefit from increased off-road capability, better performance, and higher traction without having to choose the most expensive model.

  • As its AWD technology may be available on lesser trim levels, the Harrier.EV's all-wheel-drive (QWD) dual-motor version will soon be more reasonably priced.

  • The decision was made after the AWD (QWD) variant significantly exceeded earlier projections by accounting for almost 30% of overall sales.

After its June 2025 launch, the Tata Harrier EV swiftly rose to prominence in the company's EV portfolio. The AWD (all-wheel-drive) system, sometimes known as QWD (Quad Wheel Drive), which employs two electric motors, one for each axle, is one of its most notable characteristics.

Nearly one-third of all Harrier.EV purchasers have chosen the AWD model, despite the QWD model's higher ex-showroom price of approximately ₹28.99 lakh. That is significantly higher than the company's first projection of 20% QWD sales.

Tata Motors is currently planning to offer the QWD configuration on more cheap trim levels rather than limiting it to the top-end "Empowered" trim due to the stronger-than-expected demand.

Dual motors may soon be added to lower trim levels

QWD is now limited to the top-spec Empowered 75-kWh model. However, it is intended to be added to mid-level models like the "Fearless +," which now has both 65 kWh and 75 kWh battery options, possibly lowering the price barrier for AWD purchasers.

Since Fearless + models start at about ₹23.99 lakh (ex-showroom), a dual-motor AWD option would make this cutting-edge drivetrain more affordable for buyers who seek performance without shelling out top dollar.

QWD offers power, performance, and versatility

The QWD dual-motor system generates a total torque of 504 Nm by combining a rear permanent magnet synchronous motor (≈ 238 PS) with a front induction motor (≈ 158 PS).

The Harrier.EV can handle rough or uneven terrain well beyond typical city driving thanks to features like "Boost Mode," six terrain settings (Normal, Sand, Mud-Ruts, Snow/Grass, Rock Crawl, Custom), and "Off-Road Assist."

The QWD model with a 75 kWh battery pack has a certified range of 622–627 km (MIDC cycle), with an estimated actual range of 460–490 km.

For individuals who value affordability or ease of use, rear-wheel drive (RWD) models with a single rear motor are still offered with 65 kWh or 75 kWh battery options.

What this might imply for buyers

Customers may be able to receive all-wheel-drive performance, off-road capability, and a long EV range without paying premium prices if QWD is made available on less expensive trim levels. This might considerably tip the scales in Harrier's favour. EVs among consumers in India's SUV market are looking for AWD EVs.

The current RWD models continue to be a more cost-effective option for individuals who do not want AWD, providing a good range and standard EV benefits.
