India Gets the S 450e Plug-In Hybrid Only
The First PHEV S-Class to Be Sold in This Market
For the Indian market, Mercedes-Benz has introduced the S-Class exclusively in the S 450e plug-in hybrid specification, marking the first time a hybridised S-Class has gone on sale here.
The powertrain pairs a 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six petrol engine with a rear-mounted electric motor and a 22kWh lithium-ion battery pack. Total system output stands at 435bhp and 680Nm of torque, with drive delivered to the rear wheels through a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
Mercedes-Benz claims a pure electric range of up to 115km, a 0 to 100kmph sprint time of 5.7 seconds, and combined fuel efficiency of 32.2kmpl on the WLTP cycle. The battery can be charged from 10 to 80 per cent in just 20 minutes using a 60kW DC fast charger.
A globally available S 450 4MATIC mild-hybrid variant with 404bhp is expected to join the line-up in India at a later date.
A Thoroughly Updated Cabin Sets the Tone
The Superscreen and MB.OS Redefine the Interior
The interior has received the most significant changes. The headline addition is the new MBUX Superscreen, which comprises a 14.4-inch OLED touchscreen, a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster, and a 12.3-inch display for the front passenger.
The system runs on Mercedes-Benz's latest MB.OS operating system and supports over-the-air software updates, while the MBUX virtual assistant gains deeper AI integration. Google Maps is now integrated into the augmented reality head-up display, projecting navigation guidance directly in the driver's line of sight.
Rear occupants are treated to 13.1-inch entertainment screens capable of video streaming, gaming, and video conferencing. The long-wheelbase configuration sold in India offers generous rear-seat space, and the four-seater executive rear seat layout allows the backrest to recline up to 43.5 degrees.
All four seats can be specified with ventilation, heating, and massage functions. Other notable features include a Burmester 4D audio system, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, four-zone automatic climate control, and an extended ambient lighting system that spans the dashboard, door pads, centre console, armrests, cupholders, air vents, and rear seat housing. Mercedes-Benz has also claimed improved NVH levels over the previous car.
Safety technology is equally comprehensive, encompassing adaptive cruise control, autonomous emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keeping assist, surround-view cameras, and multiple airbags, including dedicated seatbelt airbags. The adaptive air suspension with E-Active Body Control automatically adjusts the dampers according to road surface conditions, while rear-wheel steering improves low-speed manoeuvrability.
Exterior Receives a Focused Facelift
Updated Lighting and a Larger Grille Lead the Changes
On the outside, the overall silhouette carries over largely unchanged, but the 2026 S-Class wears a noticeably revised front end. The grille is larger than before and incorporates chrome-garnished three-pointed star elements, with an optional illuminated surround.
The Digital Light LED headlamps feature the brand's three-pointed star graphic, and the redesigned front bumper gains larger air intakes at either corner.
At the rear, new LED tail-lamps with dynamic light animations and illuminated three-pointed star motifs mirror the front lighting. The car also gets new alloy wheel designs and additional paint choices, with a full Manufaktur personalisation catalogue available to buyers.
The 2026 Mercedes-Benz S-Class goes up against the BMW 7 Series in a segment where technology and refinement are the primary battlegrounds. With the shift to a plug-in hybrid powertrain and a comprehensive cabin overhaul, Mercedes-Benz has made a strong case for the S-Class retaining its flagship status in India.
