Kia Seltos is one of the most successful SUVs of the brand in the market globally and especially dominates in countries such as India, the US, and South Korea.
Ever since its launch, the model has been a benchmark model to Kia in developing compact SUVs. As more people across the world have been seeking to drive eco-friendly cars, a hybrid Seltos has been anxiously awaited.
Measured Against Anticipated Schedule and Delayed Schedule
Thereby, the next-gen Kia Seltos Hybrid was to enter production in January 2026, with the world markets following shortly. But the South Korean media reports offer the view that this has changed, and the is now scheduled for April 2026.
Kia has not yet formally announced this delay, but reports in the industry have cited a combination of pricing reasons, strategic caution and the desire to protect the value-for-money (VFM) status of the Seltos as some possible factors.
So what has delayed it?
In other markets, the hybrid variant of Seltos is likely to be powered by a 1.6-litre turbo-petrol GDi engine which will provide reinforced e-AWD. Although such an arrangement may be efficient and performance oriented, there are the issues of augmenting the production complexities and costs.
The hybrid variant will be too costly in price-conscious segments where Seltos gives tough competition and stagnate sales. The concern shown by Kia can be to prevent the potential risk of losing good customers and suffer at the same time as maintaining low prices.
Interestingly, the larger Kia Sorento SUV sells approximately 70 percent of its models as the hybrid-powered varieties, but it is also a premium model so much of the price increase is palatable, something that may not be possible with customers of the Seltos.
The Hybrid Road to India
In India, Kia is said to be looking into a low-cost hybrid that uses the well-established 1.5-litre, naturally-aspirated petrol engine mated to a front-wheel drive set-up. Such a strategy would make the prices more affordable without sacrificing an enhanced fuel economy.
The second-generation Seltos will find its way to India by the end of 2025 and the hybrid is also supposed to follow, probably long after.
