Tata Sierra ICE Design Patent Filed – Here’s What’s New

Tata Sierra ICE Confirmed – What’s Different from the EV? Tata Motors has filed a design patent for the internal combustion engine version of the Sierra, confirming a petrol and diesel-powered variant alongside the EV.

Tata Motors has officially filed a design patent for the production-spec Sierra, signaling that the iconic SUV is inching closer to launch. The company had previously showcased the electric version of the Sierra at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025, but this latest filing confirms that a traditional petrol and diesel-powered version is also in development.

While the overall silhouette and rugged appeal of the Sierra remain intact, there are a few noticeable changes in the final production version:

  • No More Kinked B-Pillar: One of the key design elements of the concept version— the kink in the B-pillar—has been removed from the production model.

  • New Alloy Wheel Design: Tata Motors has altered the alloy wheel design for the Sierra ICE version. Reports suggest that two different alloy wheel options might be offered at launch.

  • Signature Design Elements Retained: The Sierra will continue to feature its high, flat bonnet, a sleek LED light bar, and a split headlamp setup. The SUV will also sport two-tone bumpers with a gloss black and grey finish, squared-off wheel arches, and prominent chunky door cladding for a more rugged appeal.

Tata Sierra ICE – Engine & Performance Expectations

Unlike the all-electric version, the Tata Sierra ICE will be offered with two powerful engine options:

  1. 1.5-litre Turbo-Petrol Engine

  2. Power Output: 168 bhp

  3. Torque: 280 Nm

  4. Transmission: Expected to have manual and automatic options

  5. 2.0-litre Diesel Engine

  6. Power Output: 168 bhp

  7. Torque: 350 Nm

  8. Transmission: Likely to be paired with a 6-speed manual and automatic gearbox

Interestingly, this will be the first Tata car to feature the new 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine. This engine is also expected to make its way into other Tata models like the Curvv, Safari, and Harrier in the near future.

Positioning & Expected Rivals

The Tata Sierra ICE will sit below the Tata Harrier in the brand’s SUV lineup. Since it will be under 4.3 metres in length, it is expected to be positioned against:

  • Mahindra Thar Roxx

  • Force Gurkha

  • Maruti Suzuki Grand Vitara

  • Kia Seltos

  • Hyundai Creta

  • Honda Elevate

With its retro-modern design, off-road capability, and Tata’s reputation for safety, the Sierra could be an exciting alternative to both rugged off-roaders and premium mid-size SUVs.

Tata Harrier EV: The Future of Tata’s Electric SUVs

In addition to the Sierra ICE, Tata Motors recently showcased the Harrier EV as part of its EV Day event. Unlike its diesel-powered sibling, the Harrier EV will feature a dual-motor, all-wheel-drive setup, making it Tata’s first AWD electric SUV.

  • Range Expectation: Over 500 km on a single charge

  • Battery Pack: Likely to be a large-capacity unit for extended driving range

  • Affordable Variant: A single-motor, front-wheel-drive version may also be introduced for budget-conscious buyers

With Tata’s aggressive push towards both ICE and electric SUVs, the brand is set to offer something for every kind of SUV buyer in the coming months.
