- Electric vehicle sales crossed the 10,000-unit mark for the first time, reaching a record monthly high.
Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles Ltd. (TMPVL) reported strong sales growth in May 2026, supported by rising demand across its internal combustion engine and electric vehicle portfolio.
The company recorded total passenger vehicle sales of 59,790 units during the month, a 42.22 per cent increase from 42,040 units sold in May 2025.
The latest performance reflects continued momentum for the automaker, with higher domestic sales, growing retail registrations and record electric vehicle volumes contributing to overall growth.
Domestic Passenger Vehicle Sales Maintain Upward Momentum
Domestic passenger vehicle sales stood at 59,090 units in May 2026, compared with 41,557 units in the corresponding month last year, representing year-on-year growth of 42.19 per cent.
Compared with April 2026, when domestic sales reached 59,000 units, volumes improved by 90 units. Sales edged up by 0.15 per cent compared to the previous month, suggesting demand remained steady despite the brand already posting strong values.
Tata Motors stated that wholesale volumes increased by 42 per cent during the month, while retail registrations grew by more than 50 per cent year-on-year. The company also strengthened its position as India's second-largest passenger vehicle manufacturer based on retail registrations.
Electric Vehicle Business Achieves New Milestone
One of the most significant highlights of May 2026 was the performance of Tata Motors' electric vehicle division. Combined domestic and export EV sales reached 10,517 units, marking the first time the company has crossed the 10,000-unit threshold in a single month.
The figure represents an 85 per cent increase over the 5,685 units sold in May 2025 and is the highest monthly EV sales volume recorded by Tata Motors so far.
The increase comes amid expanding EV adoption and strong demand for the company's electric vehicle portfolio, which currently includes the Tiago EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, Curvv EV and Harrier EV.
Export Volumes Continue to Expand
Tata Motors also recorded growth in overseas markets. Passenger vehicle exports rose to 700 units in May 2026, compared with 483 units during the same month last year.
This resulted in a 44.93 per cent year-on-year increase. While exports remain a relatively small contributor to overall volumes, the steady rise highlights the company's ongoing efforts to strengthen its international presence.
