Pune RTO: Time to Upgrade Your Vehicle’s Number Plates with HSRP

If you own a vehicle bought before 2019, it’s time for an upgrade. The Pune RTO is making HSRP mandatory for safety and security, and here’s everything you need to know—from online registration to fee details—to keep your ride legal and hassle-free.

High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) are not just a fancy upgrade; they are designed to make your vehicle more secure. These plates come with special features like tamper-proof designs and unique identification numbers that help law enforcement track vehicles more effectively.

For those driving older vehicles, especially ones registered before April 2019, this new system is a must. The move is all about boosting safety, reducing fraud, and ensuring a smoother identification process in case of emergencies.

Key Details and Deadlines You Should Know

If your vehicle was bought or registered before April 2019, you’re in the group that needs to make the switch. The State Transport Department has set a firm deadline of March 31, 2025, for installing these new HSRP plates.

It might sound like there’s plenty of time, but with over 25 lakh vehicles in the Pune RTO system, the pace of switching is alarmingly slow. So far, only around 2,500 drivers have taken the step, while many still haven’t replaced their old plates.

This initiative isn’t new—it stems from a Supreme Court ruling that made HSRP mandatory for all vehicles manufactured until 2018. If your vehicle sports the MH 12 number, you’re part of Zone One, where special attention is given due to the high vehicle count in Pune.

With 69 centers set up around the city, the government is making it easy for you to comply.

Simple Steps to Get Your HSRP Installed

Upgrading to HSRP might sound like a chore, but the process is quite straightforward and user-friendly.

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Register Online in Advance
Vehicle owners must register online at mhhsrp.com at least two days before their appointment. This helps streamline the process and avoid long waits.

  2. Choose Your Preferred Date
If you can’t make it on the scheduled day, no worries—you can select any other date within a 90-day window. Just be sure to plan, as the appointment slot is crucial for a smooth transition.

  3. Visit One of the 69 Centers
There are plenty of centers around Pune to serve you. Simply visit the one most convenient for you, and have your old number plates replaced with the new, secure HSRP.

  4. Pay the Fee
The fee for this upgrade varies based on your vehicle type:

  5. Two-wheelers and tractors are charged Rs 450

  6. Three-wheelers are charged Rs 500, and

  7. Four-wheelers along with medium and heavy commercial vehicles require Rs 745

NOTE: These fees do not include GST, so keep that in mind when budgeting.

Remember, if you delay the process beyond the 90-day window once you have your appointment date, the fee you paid will not be refunded. So, it’s best to stick to your planned schedule!

What Happens If You Miss the Deadline?

The Pune RTO is very serious about this new regulation. If you fail to install the HSRP by March 31, 2025, you could face penalties. The aim is to have every vehicle up to date with these high-security plates for your safety and the overall security of Pune’s roads. The RTO administration is ready to take action against those who do not comply, so don’t delay—get your HSRP installed well before the deadline.

Why You Should Upgrade: The Bigger Picture

Beyond just following the law, upgrading to HSRP is a step towards a safer and more secure driving experience. These new plates help reduce fraud, ease the process of tracking stolen vehicles, and improve overall road safety.

With more than 25 lakh vehicles in the region, ensuring that each vehicle has an HSRP is a move that benefits everyone—from the individual driver to the community at large.

Additionally, as more drivers make the switch, the process will likely become more streamlined, and future upgrades may be even easier. It’s a win-win situation: you stay compliant, and Pune’s roads become a bit safer and more secure for all.

In a nutshell, if your vehicle was registered before April 2019, take this as a friendly reminder to upgrade your number plates to HSRP. The process is simple, the benefits are huge, and it’s all about making your ride safer and more secure. So, make the switch today and drive with confidence knowing you’re on the right side of the law.
