Hence, after cars below four meters and compact SUVs, it is time to show the mid-size SUVs in India, between 4.4 to 4.7 m in exterior length. There was a slight degrowth in March 2025, posting a total of 27,734 units in sales, which is down 6.68% from the 29,719 units seen in March 2024. Mahindra continued to have an edge in the market, with various players performing differently.
Mid-Size SUV Sales March 2025
With the biggest set of sales, the Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio N accounted for a total volume of 13,913 units, but this was an 8.17% decrease from the previous year on year to 15,151 units.
Mahindra XUV700 held steady with 6,851 units, gaining traction by 3.63% against 6,611 units last March. New volumes in Mahindra's return count came from its new electric SUV XEV 9e, with 2,080 units in its first month of sale.
The Hyundai Alcazar recorded 1,431 units, a slight increase of 0.77% from 1,420 units in March 2024. However, Tata's offerings witnessed a steep decline: the Safari dropped by 31.41% to 1,415 units, and the Harrier fell by 38.41% to 1,265 units, against figures of 2,063 and 2,054 in the previous year.
MG Hector and Hector Plus observed the continuation of the downward trend by selling a meager 547 units only, down by an immense 71.01% from 1,887 units worth of sales logged in March 2024.
On a similar note, the Jeep Compass moved a total of 142 units, down 56.84% from last year's tally of 329 units. For the other premium options, Hyundai Tucson posted 89 units, a drop of 19.09%, whereas Volkswagen Tiguan slipped off the charts with only 1 unit against 94 units a year ago, a decline of 98.94%. Citroen C5 Aircross reported nothing in March 2025 and in March 2024.
Sales in the Midsize SUV Segment for the FY 2025
The Mid-size SUV segment ended the FY 2025 calendar with total sales of 339,910 units, achieving a growth of 5.05% compared to the sales of 323,562 units in FY 2024.
While several players faced a decline in sales, Mahindra’s stellar performance, along with newer EV players, buoyed the overall segment sales.
Mahindra Scorpio and Scorpio N continued to be segment leaders with sturdy sales of 164,842 units, an increase of 16.53 % over FY 2024’s figure of 141,462 units, followed in turn by Mahindra XUV700, also registering strong sales in the segment with sales of 93,082 units, an increase of 17.23 % over 79,398 units reported last fiscal year.
This downward trajectory was noted by top models of Tata's SUVs. Tata Safari ended FY 2025 at 20,034 units, an 8.70% decline, while Harrier slipped by a significant 23.25%, registering 18,958 units to 24,701 units of the previous year.
Another major competitor, Hyundai Alcazar, saw a drop of 17.45%, selling 17,132 units in FY 2025 as compared to 20,753 units in FY 2024. The MG, in there were Hector and Hector Plus, which badly declined in sales to the tune of 43.07% from 27,435 units to 15,620 units.
A fresh entrant in the segment, Mahindra XEV 9e, which started production in January 2025, accounted for 5,422 units within just a few months of its introduction, positively influencing the segment. Premium offerings like the Jeep Compass and Hyundai Tucson, on the other hand, went on a downslide, with the former registering a decrease of 21.38% to 2,604 units and the latter down 54.25% to 1,319 units, respectively.
Similarly, the Volkswagen Tiguan notched up 888 units, reflecting a decrease of 45.12% over FY 2024’s 1,618 units. The Citroen C5 Aircross recorded only 9 units in FY 2025 compared to 56 units in FY 2024. Despite several key models posting lower sales, an enlarged segment with Mahindra leadership and newer electric SUV entries sustained the upward growth. With changing preferences and increasing interests in electrification, the Mid-Size SUV segment is likely in for a more cut-throat FY 2026.
