India’s electric car segment has come a long way, with lots of OEMs chasing this segment. Thus promising was this market that India’s largest car maker, Maruti Suzuki, was enticed to launch its first-ever EV soon, the eVitara. There are now around ten major car manufacturers in India that are going into the electric car space.
While the segment is growing at a decent pace, the heavyweights are already witnessing a slide. The sales charts are speaking for themselves.
The month of March 2025 saw the sale of 12,356 electric vehicles in India, recording a Year-on-Year growth of 26.18% with a volume gain of 2,564 units.
The FY25 saw the sold electric vehicle numbering 1,07,645, marked Year-on-Year growth of 17.63% and a volume gain of 16,139 units.
Electric Car Retail Sales March 2025
At the top of the sales charts, we can still see Tata Motors with a strong EV portfolio. In March 2025, Tata sold 4,710 EVs, down from 7,184 EVs sold in March 2024, with a 39.72% YoY decline, losing 3,104 units in volume YoY. The company enjoyed 73.37% market share last year, which reduced to 38.10% in March 2025.
One company that has gained heavily from the fall in Tata's sales is JSW MG Motor India, presently with a market share of 31.47%, compared to 11.97% in the past year.
MG Windsor has played a pivotal role in making MG a front-runner in EV manufacturing in India. The company announced tremendous 231.82% YoY growth, selling 3,889 cars last month compared to 1,172 units sold last year.
At number 3 in the list, Mahindra sold 1,944 units and accounted for a market share of 15.73%, with a growth of 180.92% YoY. Hyundai established 6.87% of India’s electric vehicle market share with the recently launched Creta Electric.
Last month, the company sold 849 EVs, indicating a YoY growth rate of 454.9%, compared to 153 units sold last year. Next, BYD completed the list with 396 units representing175% YoY growth, followed by BMW 250 EVs up 237.83% YoY, Mercedes-Benz with 170 units and 220.75% YoY, Citroen with 46 units down by 74.15% YoY, Volvo with 46 units down by 9.8% YoY, Kia with 24 units down by 29.41% YoY, with 32 units sold by other brands down 43.85% YoY.
Electric Car Retail Sales FY2025
In FY25, Tata Motors held more than half of the electric vehicle market share at 53.52%, dropping from 70.52% in FY24. The sale of 57,616 EVs in FY25 was also less than the 64,530 units sold the previous year, leading to a 10.71% YoY decline, losing 6,914 units in lost volume YoY. At present, it has five models in production: Tiago EV, Tigor EV, Punch EV, Nexon EV, and Curvv EV.
MG has more than doubled its market share of 28.02% in FY25 compared to 12.77% in FY24. Sales stood at 30,162 units, which was a 158.16% YoY growth. In 3rd place, we have Mahindra selling 8,182 units in FY25. Compared with units sold last year, Mahindra registered a 33.71% Year-on-Year rise from 6119 units sold the previous year. This is then followed by BYD at 3,401 units, Hyundai at 2,410 units, Citroën at 1,962 units, BMW at 1,550 units, Mercedes-Benz with 1,133 units, Kia with 414 units, Volvo with 394 units, and other brands together constituted for 421 units.
