FASTag has become the standard method of paying tolls on Indian highways, and Punjab National Bank FASTag is one of the widely used options issued under the National Electronic Toll Collection (NETC) programme run by NHAI and IHMCL. FASTag removes the need to carry cash at toll booths and lets vehicles pass through toll lanes without stopping. Below is a complete guide covering its working, recharge, and management.
A Punjab National Bank FASTag is a reloadable, prepaid tag fixed to a vehicle's windscreen. Once active, it uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to communicate with toll plaza readers, and the applicable toll amount is deducted automatically from the linked prepaid balance. There is no cash exchange involved, and no interest is paid on the balance It is presently accepted at more than 400 toll plazas across national and state highways, with more locations being added to the network over time.
Once affixed to the windscreen and activated, the tag identifies the vehicle as it approaches a toll plaza. The system checks the tag account and automatically deducts the toll charge from the prepaid balance, letting the vehicle pass without stopping.
Every transaction triggers an SMS alert to the mobile number registered with the account, confirming the deducted amount. This is why maintaining a sufficient balance through timely recharge matters, since a low or nil balance can interrupt an otherwise smooth journey.
After you buy FASTag online, you need to maintain sufficient balance to avoid delays at toll plazas. Adding funds to the tag is straightforward once the account is active through via Park+.
Go to the FASTag widget on the website
Enter your vehicle registration number to fetch your FASTag details.
Check your current balance before proceeding, if needed.
Enter the recharge amount and select your preferred payment method (UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking).
Complete the payment securely to top up your FASTag wallet.
You will receive a confirmation and real-time alert once the recharge is successful.
To recharge your PNB FASTag online, you do not need to submit any documents. However, if you are applying for a new PNB FASTag, you may need to provide the following documents:
Vehicle Registration Certificate (RC)
Passport-size photograph of the vehicle owner
KYC documents, including valid ID proof and address proof, as applicable to the vehicle owner’s category.
The documents are mainly required when you buy a new FASTag online or offline.
Besides the bank's own portal, Park+ provides a convenient way to recharge your PNB FASTag online. Some of the key benefits include:
Recharge without login: Top up your PNB FASTag using just your vehicle registration number, without needing to log into the bank's portal separately.
Quick balance check: Check your current FASTag balance before recharging, helping you avoid unnecessary top-ups.
Cashback and offers: Occasional cashback, discounts or rewards are available on eligible FASTag recharge transactions.
Multiple payment options: Recharge securely using UPI, debit card, credit card or net banking.
Real-time alerts: Receive instant notifications for every recharge and toll deduction, helping you track usage.
Buying a FASTag involves a one-time issuance fee, along with a refundable security deposit and a minimum threshold amount that varies by vehicle class. The issuance or replacement fee is ₹100, inclusive of applicable taxes.
Here’s the fee structure for PNB FASTag:
| Vehicle Class | Type of Vehicle | Security Deposit | Threshold Amount |
|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Car / Jeep / Van | ₹200 | ₹100 |
| 4 (VC20) | Tata Ace and similar light commercial vehicle | ₹200 | ₹100 |
| 5 | Light commercial vehicle (2-axle) / mini-bus | ₹300 | ₹140 |
| 6 | Light commercial vehicle (3-axle), 3-axle bus/truck | ₹400 | ₹300 |
| 7 | 2-axle bus/truck | ₹400 | ₹300 |
| 12 | Truck (4, 5, 6-axle) | ₹400 | ₹300 |
| 15 to 17 | 7-axle truck, earth-moving and heavy construction machinery | ₹400 | ₹300 |
Every tag holder receives an SMS alert after each transaction, showing the amount deducted and the resulting balance. In addition, a FASTag statement is sent by email on a quarterly basis, summarising transactions carried out and the balance available during that period.
Any discrepancy in the statement or transactions should be reported to the bank within 15 days, and disputes relating to a specific transaction should ideally be raised within 7 days of that transaction. Balance can also be checked by logging into the online portal or by contacting the bank's customer care line.
The tag remains valid for five years from the date of issuance, and the maximum balance permitted on the tag at any time is ₹1,00,000. If the account stays unused with an insufficient balance for six months, it is closed after prior intimation to the tag holder.
There are two general cases when a FASTag is closed - voluntarily by the tag holder or in case it is lost/stolen.
To close an account voluntarily: The tag holder must visit a branch or kiosk, return the physical tag and submit the required documentation, after which any remaining balance is refunded within 15 days.
If a tag is lost, stolen or damaged: This should be reported immediately to customer care, and a police report may be required. The tag can be blocked by contacting the bank's helpline or by writing in through the registered email channel. Once reported lost or stolen, a tag cannot be reactivated or reused even if it is later recovered, and it should be cut in half to prevent misuse.
Some frequent problems tag holders face include:
Recharge amounts not reflecting immediately: Sometimes the recharge amount does not reflect immediately. In such a case, users are asked to wait and try checking the balance again after some time.
Tag getting blacklisted due to a low: The tag is often flagged as ‘Blacklisted’ in case of low or no balance. Thus, regularly check the available balance and top up when required.
Failed payments: During high traffic on the payment gateway, transactions fail. Try recharging tags after some time.
