Toyota has formally announced the 2026 Land Cruiser FJ, a more affordable and smaller brother of the Land Cruiser family that is sometimes referred to as the "Baby Land Cruiser."
This new vehicle, which brings back the "FJ" designation, is meant to appeal to consumers looking for compact, tough off-road capability.
Dimensions and Design
Thick cladding, robust arches, and a spare wheel located on the tailgate characterize the Land Cruiser FJ's boxy, upright form.
It has two different front-end designs: circular headlights for a vintage appearance and rectangular ones for a contemporary touch.
Wheelbase: 2,580 mm; dimensions: 4,575 mm Long, 1,855 mm Wide, and 1,960 mm high.
A 31° approach angle and 215.3 mm of ground clearance are provided for competent off-road performance.
Repairing off-road is made easier with detachable corner bumpers.
Powertrain and platform
The model has more body rigidity for tough use and is based on Toyota's IMV platform, which is also utilized by the Hilux series.
A 2.7-liter, four-cylinder gasoline engine under the hood generates about 161 horsepower and 245 Nm of torque (181 lb-ft). The engine is coupled with a 4-wheel drive system that operates part-time and a 6-speed automated gearbox.
Launch and Market rollout
With production slated for Thailand for specific export markets like Southeast Asia and the Middle East, the Land Cruiser FJ is expected to debut in Japan in the middle of 2026.
But according to Toyota, there aren't any immediate plans to introduce the model in North America or Europe.
With this vehicle, Toyota is attempting to broaden the Land Cruiser lineup by providing a cheaper and compact version that yet has true off-road capabilities.
The FJ offers an appealing alternative for consumers who have appreciated the Land Cruiser's tough reputation but have considered full-size vehicles to be too big or costly.
