The Altroz will get a facelift in the coming days. Then why discontinued? And why refer to it as a sports car? Well, while going through the life cycle of Tata Altroz, we are presuming or inferring that upon the launch of the Altroz facelift, the company might discontinue production of the Racer variant. As we are all aware that Tata Motors launched Altroz Racer in the year 2024 with a potent turbo petrol engine. Together with a powerful petrol engine, the Racer variant is filled with some enthusiastic features.
A few months down the line, Tata Motors began to include some of Racer's features in the normal model of Altroz. Still, the punchy engine remains exclusive to the Racer edition alone. That being said, now we are speculating that Tata will probably make the punchy turbo petrol engine available in other models of Altroz, perhaps in the mid & top variants. With that, we could see the end of Racer nomenclature from the Altroz lineup!
Powertrain of the current Tata Altroz
Today, Tata Altroz comes with three engines – 1.2-litre NA petrol engine (87bhp and 115Nm), 1.2-litre CNG (72bhp and 103Nm) & 1.5-litre diesel engine (89bhp and 200Nm).
While the Racer edition gets a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine (118bhp & 170Nm), coupled with a manual gearbox only. So when the facelift is launched, Tata can make the turbo petrol engine available starting from the mid variants of the Altroz. We can also expect the engine to come with a 7-speed DCA gearbox!
New Facelift
Based on spy photos, we can look forward to tweaks such as new, revised headlamps, new bumpers, and new fog lamp housing. Also, the Altroz will likely receive all-LED lighting.
Internally, we can look forward to some revisions on the dashboard. The brand will likely provide touch-based AC controls & a 2-spoke steering wheel with a lit Tata logo – similar to other Tata vehicles. And indeed, we can observe a whole array of new features on the new model.
Conclusion
The Tata Altroz Racer made a niche for itself in the Indian hot hatch market by providing enthusiasts with a rare blend of sporty design and robust performance, all for under ₹10 lakh. But now that Tata Motors is set to bring the turbo-petrol engine and high-end features to the regular Altroz range, the unique identity of the Racer variant may be done away with. While this might be the end of an angry badge, it could also point to a good direction towards making performance and high-end features available across the variants. Enthusiasts might lament the loss of the "Racer" badge, but the essence of the car could continue in a wider, more premium Altroz range.
