In financial year 2025 (FY25), sales of premium hatchbacks in India indicated waning customers' interest in this segment, with sales falling by up to 50 percent.
Surprisingly, subcompact and micro-SUVs with the same price segment are now sought after more than these premium hatchbacks. Four premium hatchbacks are currently present in the Indian market.
Below is a detailed report of their sales in FY2025.
| Models | FY2025 | FY2024 | Growth/Dip (%) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Maruti Baleno | 1,67,161 | 1,95,607 | -15% |
| Hyundai i20 | 55,513 | 69,988 | -21% |
| Toyota Glanza | 48,839 | 52,262 | -7% |
| Tata Altroz | 35,187 | 70,162 | -50% |
Key Takeaways from the data
Maruti Baleno is still the top-selling premium hatchback, with more than 1.6 lakh dispatches and sales in FY2025. Nevertheless, the model had a sales decrease of over 25,000 units from the last fiscal year.
Hyundai i20 (the N-Line) recorded a decline in sales by 21 percent during this financial year. Hyundai sold approximately 50,000 units, which is approximately 14,000 units lower than the last financial year.
The Toyota Glanza, a rebranded sibling to the Maruti Baleno, recorded approximately 50,000 units sold in FY25. It had a fairly moderate year-over-year (YoY) fall of 7 percent.
The Tata Altroz and its sporty version, the Tata Altroz Racer, together, retailed more than 35,000 units. It recorded the steepest fall in sales, decreasing by 50 percent from FY2024. The Altroz itself is going to receive a facelift next month that might make it more attractive, leading to improved sales.
Conclusion
The financial year 2025 reflected an obvious trend in Indian consumer preference against premium hatchbacks to subcompact and micro-SUVs, which provide a comparable price segment with more road presence and practicality. While dominating the segment, the Maruti Baleno and its competition—Hyundai i20, Toyota Glanza, and Tata Altroz—all experienced a significant drop in sales, the Altroz with the steepest at 50%. As customers keep moving towards SUVs, premium hatchbacks will have to undergo major updates, feature additions, or price revisions to stay in the game. The soon-to-be-facelifted Tata Altroz can be a test case for whether such a change can revive interest in this declining segment.
