The Indian sedan market saw significant declines in September 2024, with total sales down nearly 20% year-on-year (YoY). Despite SUV competition, sedans like the Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Aura showed resilience, securing top spots in the sedan sales chart. Overall, September registered 25,002 units, slightly up from August but far from last year’s figures.
Top-Selling Sedans: Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Aura Stay Strong
The Maruti Dzire continued its dominance, leading the chart with 10,852 units sold a 21.81% decline from September 2023 but still enough to command a hefty 43.41% of the market share. With an updated version for release in November, the Dzire is positioned to maintain its top rank. Hyundai’s Aura came in second, selling 4,462 units up 14.41% YoY and 3.67% month-on-month (MoM). Honda Amaze also saw positive growth, selling 2,820 units, marking a 9.43% YoY increase, largely due to its affordable appeal in the sub-4-meter segment.
Mid-Tier Sedans: VW Virtus and Skoda Slavia Face Challenges
Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia experienced declines, with Virtus selling 1,697 units (a 5.25% YoY drop) and Slavia showing a YoY drop of 12.02% with 1,391 units sold. However, Slavia achieved a 24% MoM boost, indicating steady interest. Both models face a competitive market that demands continued updates to stay relevant.
Struggles for Verna and Honda City
The Hyundai Verna, another popular sedan, showed a severe YoY decline of 54.10% with only 1,198 units sold. This once-popular choice faces mounting pressure from competitors. The Honda City also struggled, with sales plummeting by 44% YoY to just 895 units. Despite brand loyalty, both models seem affected by a market gravitating towards higher ground clearance and sporty SUV options.
Compact and Premium Sedans: Declines for Tata Tigor, Maruti Ciaz, and Toyota Camry
The Tata Tigor, alongside its electric model, faced significant de-growth, with only 894 units sold, a 41.72% YoY drop. The Maruti Ciaz, known for its spacious interior, recorded the steepest decline at 55.60% YoY, selling only 661 units. Toyota’s premium Camry sedan also saw a 51% decline in sales, with 127 units sold.
Overall, September 2024’s sedan sales show that SUVs and crossovers continue to overshadow traditional sedans. Models like the Maruti Dzire and Hyundai Aura are holding their ground, but the segment remains under pressure to adapt to changing consumer preferences.
