Tata Motors, one of India’s leading car manufacturers, continues to excel in the sub-4m SUV segment, with the Punch firmly establishing itself as a market leader against competitors like the Hyundai Exter and Citroen C3. Recently, Tata has made a significant adjustment to the Punch lineup, leading to the removal of two of its trim levels from both Petrol and CNG options, sparking speculation about their potential discontinuation.
Tata Punch Variants Rejig
In September 2024, the Tata Punch emerged as the company’s best-selling vehicle, with impressive sales of 13,711 units (including both Punch ICE and Punch EV). Given its popularity, any changes to this model are noteworthy, especially during the festive season.
The variants that have been de-listed, likely indicating discontinuation, fall under the Adventure persona, which is one tier above the base Pure variant. Previously, buyers could choose from several Adventure trims, including Adventure, Adventure Rhythm, Adventure S, and Adventure+ S. However, as of late October 2024, Tata Motors officially removed the Adventure and Adventure Rhythm trims from its lineup. This discontinuation affects both petrol-only and petrol+CNG bi-fuel variants, along with the manual and AMT gearbox options.
The Adventure trim used to start at an ex-showroom price of Rs 7 lakh for the Adventure Petrol MT. Now, potential buyers looking for something beyond the base Pure persona will need to spend Rs 7.6 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Adventure S trim, which includes a single-pane sunroof. Similarly, the Punch Adventure AMT, which started at Rs 7.6 lakh (ex-showroom), now begins at Rs 8.2 lakh (ex-showroom) for the Adventure S AMT variant. For CNG variants, the Punch Adventure iCNG previously started at Rs 7.95 lakh (ex-showroom); now, buyers must choose the Adventure S iCNG for Rs 8.55 lakh (ex-showroom).
Implications of the Changes
This strategic move by Tata Motors suggests two possibilities:
Encouraging Sunroof Options: Tata Motors may be actively steering buyers towards mid-tier variants equipped with sunroofs.
Market Demand Shifts: There seems to be a growing consumer preference for sunroof-equipped variants, prompting manufacturers to adjust their offerings accordingly.
While the popularity of sunroofs is currently a hot topic in the automotive industry, it raises questions about their suitability in a predominantly warm and sunny landscape like India.
Aside from these changes, the rest of the Tata Punch lineup remains unchanged, continuing to cater to the diverse needs of its customers.
