Over the weekend, a survey on prospective electric car adoption by Indian car owners was published by LocalCircles. The results of the survey have been extremely inspiring. Based on the findings of the survey, at least 5 per cent of those who already have cars or those who plan to acquire one would do so with an electric car as early as in the first year.
The poll conducted among over 40 thousand consumers representing over 319 regions in India had the aim of investigating people´s attitudes towards adopting e-mobility to fight air pollution. The respondents consisted of 63% male and 37% female, including multiple groups, accounting for tiers 1, 2, 3, 4, and rural areas.
Among the key findings, the survey noted that 5% of respondents favoured the decision to buy an electric car within the next twelve months. Besides that, the potential pitfalls are thrown into the limelight by prospective electric car owners of such vehicles. Almost half the respondents (49%) reported a lack of variety within their budget limits as the main reason, with a slight increase in the number of those who couldn't find a model they liked for about the same reason. This was followed by 29% who said that electric vehicles were too expensive, and they preferred to buy a regular car instead. Compared to the lack of variety, people who reported that did.

In addition, the survey evaluated the plans of alleged car buyers with respect to their spending on electric car facilities. Of the respondents who would like to buy an electric vehicle under the survey, 55% prefer within the price range of 8 to 10 lakhs, 16% are in favour of vehicles that cost 10 to 15 lakhs, and 13% would rather win the vehicles cost more than 15 lakhs.
The environment was the greatest factor for which the participants decided to go after electric cars 44%. In comparison, 31% cited the tiredness from the fluctuating petroleum fuel expenses and 15% thought of the overall lower ownership costs.
However, the survey also uncovered a knowledge gap, with approximately 15% of prospective buyers admitting inadequate awareness about electric vehicles, indicating a need for enhanced communication and education efforts.
The LocalCircles survey, conducted through its community social media platform, included validated citizens registered with LocalCircles. The platform serves as a conduit for citizens and small businesses to voice concerns and advocate for policy interventions, fostering a citizen-centric approach to policymaking.
With the demand for electric cars poised to rise, driven by environmental consciousness and economic considerations, stakeholders across sectors are urged to address existing challenges and amplify efforts to promote awareness and accessibility of electric vehicles in the Indian market.
