Land Rover has made significant changes to the Defender lineup in India, now offering only two engine options across seven variants. The available powertrains are the 2.0-litre petrol and the 3.0-litre diesel engines, with the V8 and PHEV options discontinued. The Defender continues to be available in all three body styles—90, 110, and 130.
Revised Pricing and Variants
With the engine options streamlined, the Defender’s pricing now ranges from ₹1.04 crore to ₹1.57 crore (ex-showroom). Previously, the lineup was priced between ₹92.70 lakh and ₹2.85 crore. The removal of the V8 and PHEV options has resulted in a higher base price but a significantly lower top-end price.
The 2.0-litre petrol engine is now exclusively available in the 110 body style under the X-Dynamic HSE trim. Meanwhile, the 3.0-litre diesel engine is offered across all three body styles—90, 110, and 130—and comes in three trims: X-Dynamic HSE, X, and Sedona Edition. This update also means the base price has increased since the 2.0-litre petrol is no longer available in the base 90 body style.
Rationale Behind the Changes
According to dealer sources, the lineup was rationalized to focus on the most popular engine options. Despite the changes, the Defender continues to be fully imported, unlike the Range Rover and Range Rover Sport, which are now locally assembled.
In related news, Land Rover has started deliveries of the locally assembled Range Rover Sport, marking a new chapter in the brand's operations in India.
Expected Impact
These changes are likely to streamline the buying process for customers while offering a more focused selection of the most sought-after models. With the V8 option now reserved for the limited Defender Octa V8, buyers looking for high-end performance will need to act quickly to secure one of these limited units.
