Hyundai is making waves in the electric vehicle (EV) market with its plans to introduce an off-road capable version of the popular Ioniq 5. Recently spotted undergoing testing, the camouflaged prototype of the Ioniq 5 reveals several upgrades that suggest a more rugged and adventurous variant is in the works.
Expected to join Hyundai's XRT range, dedicated to delivering more rugged versions of its SUV lineup, the upcoming Ioniq 5 variant is set to broaden the range of this innovative electric vehicle. Hyundai's XRT range currently includes models like the Tucson, Palisade, Santa Fe SUVs, and the Santa Cruz pickup truck.
The prototype of the Ioniq 5 XRT showcases significant design enhancements, including roof rails, black plastic body cladding, and robust black-coloured 18-inch alloy wheels wrapped in 30-inch all-terrain tyres. Notably, the off-road-focused variant boasts 38mm of extra ground clearance compared to the standard Ioniq 5, ensuring improved capability on challenging terrain. Expectations also include more rugged-looking bumpers, XRT badging, and a new interior theme to complement its adventurous character.
Under the hood, Hyundai is anticipated to equip the Ioniq 5 XRT with a dual-motor powertrain offering all-wheel drive capabilities. While official details are yet to be confirmed, the regular Ioniq 5 AWD variant delivers an impressive 325hp and 604Nm of torque. Powering the electric powertrain could be a 77.4kWh battery pack providing a range of approximately 418km, or the larger 84kWh battery available in the Korean-spec Ioniq 5 facelift, offering an even greater range.
Reports suggest that Hyundai is aiming to unveil the Ioniq 5 XRT by the end of this year, likely as a 2025 model year. The special variant is expected to make its debut in the United States before being introduced to the European market. However, it's unlikely to be available in the Indian market anytime soon.
With the introduction of the off-road-focused Ioniq 5 XRT, Hyundai continues to push the boundaries of electric mobility, catering to consumers seeking adventure without compromising on sustainability. Stay tuned for further updates as Hyundai prepares to unleash this exciting addition to its electrified lineup.
