BYD has announced a voluntary recall of the Seal sedan across India to check and fix a possible issue in the cells of its Blade Battery system.
Affected vehicles will receive a free battery inspection and replacement if required, with same-day delivery possible in many cases.
BYD India has officially initiated a voluntary recall for its flagship electric sedan, the BYD Seal, following reports of potential issues with its high-voltage battery system. Known for its sleek design and advanced technology, the Seal has been a significant player in the premium EV segment. This proactive move highlights the brand's commitment to safety and long-term reliability in the Indian market.
What’s Happening?
BYD has reportedly asked Seal owners across India to get their cars checked for a possible defect in the Blade battery, which is used as the high-voltage energy source in the sedan. While the company has not officially disclosed how many vehicles are affected, service centres are informing customers to seek inspections at their earliest convenience.
The issue appears to stem from a potential fault in one or more individual cells that form part of the larger battery pack. If an On-Board Diagnostics (OBD) scan detects a problem during inspection, BYD will replace the entire battery pack at no cost to the owner.
What Cars are Affected?
The recall, as of now, only applies to the BYD Seal and does not include other models in BYD’s Indian lineup. All variants of the Seal - irrespective of battery size - are being called in for inspection.
The Seal is offered in multiple battery configurations: a 61.44 kWh pack and a larger 82.56 kWh pack. It’s available in a range of trims, including Dynamic (Standard Range), Premium (Extended Range), and Performance (AWD) variants.
How the Recall Works
Owners are advised to book an appointment at an authorised BYD service centre, where technicians will conduct diagnostic checks; if the OBD scan detects any battery cell issue, the Blade battery will be replaced free of cost. For added convenience, BYD India may also arrange authorised vehicle pickup for inspection and replacement where required.
India’s EV market is still maturing, and how brands handle issues like this plays a large role in overall adoption. BYD’s proactive approach in issuing a voluntary recall before major incidents are reported could help shore up trust among buyers, particularly those considering EVs for the first time.
