BMW's Most Ambitious EV Sedan for India Yet Signals a Significant Change

BMW is getting ready to introduce the long-wheelbase I5 LWB electric sedan in India by the beginning of 2026, which will be a big step toward its goal of producing high-end EVs locally. The India-bound I5 LWB, which is based on the China-spec model, will have a larger rear compartment, upgraded suspension, and increased ground clearance that is especially designed for Indian conditions. The sedan, which is projected to cost between ₹90 lakh and ₹1 crore, is intended to draw in customers looking for a sophisticated, roomy, and cutting-edge luxury electric vehicle.

  • The upcoming launch of the long-wheelbase version of the BMW i5 LWB in India, slated for early 2026.

  • Key specifications, India-specific updates and BMW’s strategic positioning of this model in the local market.

The i5 LWB (long-wheelbase) will be introduced to the Indian market by BMW in early 2026. The news coincides with the firm getting ready to assemble this all-electric sedan locally at its Chennai production facility, which already produces models like the iX1.

In BMW's 5 Series lineup, the car will sit below the faster i5 M60 variation but above the current 530Li, filling a niche that combines luxury, space, and electric performance.

India-specific, significant modifications

Increased ground clearance is one of the most notable changes made for the Indian version of the i5 LWB. The base i5's low ride height and soft suspension made it susceptible to speed bumps and harsh urban roads in India, according to early test reports. In light of this, BMW revised the chassis.

With a rear-mounted electric motor that generates about 340 horsepower and 430 Nm of torque and is fueled by a 97 kWh battery, the eDrive40L variant is anticipated to be the India-spec vehicle. Although BMW anticipates a lower actual range in India, the same configuration gives a CLTC-rated range of up to 713 km in China.

Pricing and strategy: bridging the diesel gap

BMW is utilizing the i5 LWB to bridge the gap left by the phase-out of diesel 5 Series cars in India and bolster its electric push in the luxury sedan market.

BMW anticipates pricing the i5 LWB between ₹90 lakh to ₹1 crore (ex-showroom) due to local assembly and the EV-friendly 5% GST rate.

Why It Matters to Buyers of Luxury EVs

  • The i5 LWB will be an appealing choice for those looking for an opulent EV car with additional room and designed specifically for Indian conditions.

  • Ride comfort on uneven roads and cost competitiveness are two typical issues for high-end cars in India that are addressed by the higher ground clearance and local assembly.

  • However, like all big EV cars, its success will rely on the availability of charging stations, the battery's practical range, and the market's acceptance of EVs in the luxury sector.
