BMW's all-electric iX5 offers a claimed WLTP range of up to 845 km
The SUV will be offered with petrol, diesel, hybrid, electric and hydrogen power
BMW has taken the covers off the fifth-generation X5, and the changes go well beyond a styling update. The luxury SUV now wears the brand's Neue Klasse-inspired design language, gets a substantially reworked interior and, for the first time, is offered with five distinct powertrain choices.
Alongside the familiar petrol, diesel and plug-in hybrid options sits the first fully electric iX5, with a hydrogen fuel-cell version confirmed to arrive further down the line.
Exterior Gets a Neue Klasse Makeover
The new X5 retains its familiar SUV silhouette but wears a noticeably taller, more upright front end. The illuminated kidney grille is flanked by new double X LED light signatures that combine the daytime running lights, indicators and low beam headlights into a single unit. Adaptive LED headlights with cornering lights and matrix high beam come as standard.
Along the sides, flush fitting windows and electrically operated door handles built into the B and C pillars lend the SUV a cleaner look, while the rear gets slimmer tail lamps and a wider stance.
Buyers get a choice of 11 exterior shades and wheels ranging from 21 to 23 inches. The new X5 measures 4,994 mm in length and 2,000 mm in width, riding on a 3,035 mm wheelbase, with boot space of 655 litres that expands to 1,850 litres with the rear seats folded.
Cabin Adopts Panoramic iDrive Display
Inside, physical controls have been trimmed in favour of BMW's new Panoramic iDrive setup, which spreads information across the base of the windscreen, paired with a 17.9 inch central touchscreen and a 3D head-up display.
A panoramic glass roof, ventilated and massaging front seats, four zone climate control and a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with Dolby Atmos support feature among the highlights. A comprehensive Level 2 driver assistance suite, covering adaptive cruise control and urban driving assist, is also part of the package.
Powertrain Lineup Spans Five Options
The range opens with the X5 40 xDrive petrol, powered by a 3.0 litre turbocharged six cylinder engine with mild hybrid assistance producing 400 hp, and the X5 40d xDrive diesel with 313 hp.
The plug-in hybrid duo, the X5 50e xDrive and the range topping M60e xDrive, produce 489 hp and 612 hp respectively, both offering an electric only range of up to 102 km.
iX5 Brings 845 km Range and Fast Charging
The standout is the fully electric iX5 60 xDrive, built on an 800V architecture with a 141 kWh battery. Its dual motor setup makes 578 hp and 805 Nm, enough for a 0 to 100 kph sprint in 4.6 seconds, while BMW claims a WLTP range of up to 845 km. DC fast charging at up to 460 kW allows a 10 to 80 percent top up in just 23 minutes.
Production Set to Begin in August 2026
Production of the new X5 will commence at BMW's Spartanburg facility in the United States in August 2026. Petrol and diesel versions go on sale globally from late November 2026, with the iX5 and plug-in hybrid variants following in early 2027.
