Traffic Prahari app is a citizen-guided tool to enforce traffic laws, and the Delhi Police has launched it in the streets of the capital of India, i.e, Delhi. The app has turned the locals into traffic inspectors and with the recently initiated relaunch on September 1, 2024, the app has resulted in more than 1400-1500 citations each and every day, all due to responsible citizen reporting.
How It Works: Smartphones to Fines
Through the app, anyone can raise a flag on traffic violations seamlessly. Users can download the app and register with a mobile number and OTP after downloading the app available on the Google Play Store or App Store. They can report with only a photo or video containing visible proof of violations on the road, like red light jumping, wrong-side roads, excessive parking or road rage etc. These are then authenticated by Delhi Traffic Police engineers.
All the reports are filtered and verified that they are genuine and professional and there are no chances of fake or malicious complaints. After being confirmed, the police provide legal steps and issue challan the offenders.
Cash Rewards: Incentivising Public Vigilance
One of the greatest things that can attract people towards the initiative is its monthly cash advantage plan. The first four ones will be given cash rewards of 50,000, 25,000, 15,000 and 10,000 INR, respectively, depending on the validated reports and their numbers. This has turned the project into a civic pride cottage industry-or in a variety of instances, second income.
Origins and Influence
Traffic Prahari is the evolution of the Traffic Sentinel Scheme implemented in 2015, with other new features and aims at covering a wider digital scope. The app has more than 99,000 registered users and lakhs of violations reported and is now part of the urban governance of Delhi.
The Future
With the support of such high-level representatives of law enforcement as DCP SK Singh and Lt. Governor Vinay Kumar Saxena, the initiative shows that Delhi Police is pursuing smarter, collaborative enforcement. With traffic incidents rising in cities, it is becoming increasingly likely that Traffic Prahari will prove to be a paradigm for other metros in the coming years—a win-win combination of technology, civic responsibility, and a rewarding approach for citizens who take the plunge in solving their own problem. Initiatives like these, backed by seamless systems such as Delhi e Challan, ensure violators are held accountable efficiently while encouraging citizen participation.
