Volvo Cars has introduced "Accident Ahead Alert" which is designed to give drivers an advance alert of an accident on their route to enable them to avoid the accident. Such a highly innovative system is based on traffic management center data to generate timely warnings thus enhancing driver understanding and protecting road safety.
Initially launched in Denmark, the "Accident Ahead Alert" feature is now available across all Volvo 90, 60, and 40 series models dating back to the 2016 model year. The company plans to extend this service to additional markets throughout Europe shortly, bolstering safety measures for drivers across the continent.

This latest safety feature is another step Volvo to build upon the intelligent technology they first introduced in 2016 where their vehicles can connect and share information on road conditions and incidents. "Accident Ahead Alert" takes its connectivity to another level as it brings in the current data on traffic from traffic authorities as well as from compatible vehicles to alert the drivers of accidents along their travelling route.
In short, the principal objective of this technology is to ensure that drivers can avoid possible accidents as well as move through traffic that is caused by accidents. This, among other benefits, is provided by the system’s ability to instantly warn drivers of accidental occurrences within a distance of 100 to 400m ahead of their vehicles, thereby enhancing drivers’ ability to take preventive actions.
The feature is activated and runs on entering the accident notification system that alerts drivers of ongoing accidents via hazard lights in the dashboard display, as well as the head-up display if available. There is no worry that any personal data is disseminated since all the data is anonymized before being shared, a standpoint taken by Volvo to protect users' privacy.
Stefan Bendsen the head of the Danish Traffic Management Centre at the Danish Road Directorate stated that Volvo Cars adapting real-time traffic event data had VokUr well appreciated. She placed on the table that proto the principle about safe traffic is the warning in advance about accidents. Such warning that drivers can take time to reduce speeds and maintain a safe distance from other cars around them.
The Vision Ahead sees Volvo Cars wanting to facilitate a broader connected safety network by sharing data from partners involved in the European Data for Road Safety initiative. This is achieved through a combination of implementations of inter-European traffic management centres as well as other automotive companies, all of which contribute towards improved safety norms for European roads.
