Volkswagen Tayron R-Line Assembly Begins in India Ahead of 2026 Launch

As Volkswagen prepares to introduce a new flagship SUV for India, the locally assembled Tayron R-Line signals a clear step up in size, performance and technology. Sitting above the Tiguan, it previews what buyers can expect from VW’s premium three-row offering when it arrives in showrooms.

  • Volkswagen has commenced local assembly of the seven-seat Tayron R-Line at its Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar plant, ahead of an early-2026 India launch.

  • Positioned above the Tiguan R-Line, the Tayron arrives as VW’s premium three-row SUV, powered by a 2.0-litre turbo-petrol engine with 4Motion all-wheel drive.

Volkswagen has officially marked its return to the premium three-row SUV segment in India, as local assembly for the Volkswagen Tayron R-Line has officially commenced. The SUV is being put together at the brand's Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar (formerly Aurangabad) plant in Maharashtra.

Here is a detailed breakdown of everything you need to know about this upcoming premium SUV.

Premium SUV Positioned Above Tiguan R-Line

The Tayron R-Line will sit at the top of Volkswagen’s SUV line-up in India, above the existing Tiguan R-Line. Based on the MQB EVO platform, the SUV shares its mechanical roots with the Tiguan but features a longer wheelbase and larger overall dimensions to accommodate a third row of seating - a key requirement for family-oriented buyers.

Performance and Powertrain

Under the hood, the India-spec Tayron R-Line stays true to Volkswagen’s "TSI" petrol strategy. It will be powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-petrol engine that delivers:

  • Power: 204 hp

  • Torque: 320 Nm

  • Transmission: 7-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic

  • Drivetrain: Volkswagen’s signature 4Motion All-Wheel Drive (AWD) system as standard.

Exterior and Interior Highlights

The "R-Line" badge ensures that the Tayron looks sportier than its standard counterparts. Expect more aggressive bumpers, unique alloy wheel designs, and R-Line badging throughout the exterior.

Inside, the cabin is a massive leap forward in terms of tech and luxury:

  • Infotainment: A massive 15-inch touchscreen system dominates the dashboard.

  • Cockpit: A fully digital driver’s display (Virtual Cockpit).

  • Comfort: Ventilated front seats, a massive panoramic sunroof, and 3-zone climate control.

  • Ambiance: 30-colour ambient lighting to suit different moods.

Safety and Technology

Safety is expected to be a strong focus for the Tayron R-Line, with multiple airbags, electronic stability control, 360-degree camera systems, tyre pressure monitoring and Level 2 advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) anticipated to be part of the package. These features align the Tayron with the safety expectations of modern premium SUVs.

In India, the Tayron R-Line is expected to rival other three-row SUVs such as the Skoda Kodiaq, MG Gloster, and Jeep Meridian. With European build quality, a feature-rich interior and all-weather capable AWD, Volkswagen aims to offer an alternative for buyers seeking premium performance and space in the seven-seat SUV category.

With local assembly now underway, anticipation is building for the Tayron R-Line’s official rollout - a model that could reshape Volkswagen’s standing in India’s competitive premium SUV segment.
