Volkswagen Polo Returns; Global Debut Expected In 2026

Volkswagen has confirmed the return of the Polo, this time in an all-electric avatar. Previewed as the ID.Polo and ID. Polo GTI, the hatchback, will debut at the Munich IAA show in September 2025 and launch globally in 2026, marking 50 years of Polo’s legacy.

Volkswagen has confirmed the return of the Polo nameplate, but this time in an all-electric version. The new model will be called the ID. Polo, previewing the brand’s shift toward small, affordable electric cars.

Alongside, Volkswagen will also introduce a sportier variant named the ID. Polo GTI, which brings back the performance appeal of the classic GTI badge. Both versions will debut at the Munich IAA show in September 2025, before their market launch globally in 2026.

A Familiar Name for New Era

The Polo is one of Volkswagen’s most recognized names across the world, with a history going back to 1975. The return of the name in 2026 will mark its 50th anniversary, making the timing more special. Volkswagen hopes the Polo’s strong reputation will help the ID. Polo quickly connects with global buyers.

The Offered Designs and Features

The ID. Polo will be based on Volkswagen’s MEB Entry platform, developed exclusively for smaller electric vehicles. It will feature a single electric motor with FWD (front-wheel drive). The GTI version is expected to deliver around 223 bhp, offering a balance of performance and efficiency.

In terms of size, the new ID. Polo measures 4,053 mm in length, 1816 mm in width, and 1,530 mm in height, making it compact but still practical for everyday use.

Teaser details also highlight sporty touches on the GTI variant, including flared wheel arches, aggressive bumpers, a front diffuser, and a split spoiler.

Not just this, Volkswagen is also likely to introduce a performance-focused Clubsport variant of the ID. Polo at a later stage.

An Important Step For The Future

By reviving the Polo name as an EV, Volkswagen is aligning tradition with modern technology. The upcoming ID. Polo is expected to be one of the most important models in the brand’s small EV lineup, helping it compete in global markets that are quickly shifting toward electric mobility.

In Summary

Volkswagen has confirmed the return of the Polo, but in a new electric avatar. Previewed as the ID.Polo and ID. Polo GTI, the hatchback, will make its debut at the Munich IAA in September 2025 and launch globally in 2026. Built on the MEB Entry platform, the ID. Polo will combine Polo’s 50-year heritage with Volkswagen’s new electric future.
