In response to reports indicating modifications to FASTag regulations that can result in a decrease in transactions if the tag is inactive for more than 60 minutes before or up to 10 minutes following the read time, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has released an explanation.
NHAI denied these reports, stating that FASTag users are unaffected by the National Payments Corporation of India's (NPCI) recent circular.
Circular meant to facilitate resolution
The circular, according to NHAI, is intended to help Acquirer Banks and Issuer Banks resolve disputes about FASTag status when a car reaches a toll plaza. Additionally, it seeks to guarantee that FASTag transactions go place promptly, avoiding delays that can annoy users.
Plazas operating on the ICD 2.5 Protocol
The ICD 2.5 protocol, which offers real-time tag status and enables users to recharge their FASTag at any moment before crossing the toll plaza, is what the authority guaranteed all National Highway toll plazas would adopt.
Nonetheless, some State Highway toll plazas continue to use the outdated ICD 2.4 standard, necessitating recurring tag status updates. There are plans to shortly switch these plazas to the ICD 2.5 protocol.

More information on it
FASTag customers are advised to connect their wallets to UPI or their bank accounts with auto-recharge settings to guarantee smooth transactions. As an alternative, before arriving at the toll plaza, customers can still manually recharge their FASTag using UPI, net banking, and other payment methods.
In conclusion, NHAI has reaffirmed that FASTag customers will not encounter any new restrictions and can continue using the system seamlessly without any disruptions.
