The 2026 BMW iX3 electric SUV is in the final testing phases before its worldwide launch later this year. New images of the iX3 prototype being tested in hot weather in South Africa have been released by BMW.
The iX3 of the second generation, which was showcased by the Neue Klasse Vision X concept in the previous year, will be BMW's first model from its new lineup of electric vehicles based on the Gen6 EV platform. Its new architecture, designed exclusively for electric vehicles, promises major enhancements in range, functionality, and cost.
Concept design cues toned down
Upon viewing these prototype images, one’s first impression is that the production-spec SUV has had many aggressive contours and character lines toned down. The body panels are much smoother, the bumpers are less aggressive, and the flush door handles have been moved to the doors instead of being placed on the window line. Regular wing mirrors have also been replaced by camera-based ORVMs.
More information on the concept design
Nonetheless, the front and rear lighting signatures and the two-part rear spoiler have been retained from the concept. Through the camouflage, the slashed LED daytime running lamp signature for the headlamps is visible, and the rear features slim horizontal tail-lamps with an L-shaped design that are not connected.
The New BMW iX3 platform and powertrain
While specific details about the new Gen6 platform remain confidential, BMW has announced that it will feature 800V electrical hardware for fast charging and will support batteries with 20 percent greater energy density than the current one.
It is asserted that this can enhance the total range by up to 30 percent. BMW stated earlier that all Neue Klasse models will provide “WLTP cycle of range,” so it is yet to be determined what the next-gen iX3 offers.
BMW iX3 launch details
The official unveiling of the new iX3 is slated for late this year, with its release in global markets at least 600km (WLTPset for 2026. After the iX3, there will also be an i3 sedan, which has been showcased by the Vision Neue Klasse concept.
The new iX3 will be sold alongside the combustion-engined BMW X3. Earlier this year, India saw the launch of the petrol and diesel engine variants of the fourth-generation X3. In due course, the new iX3 can also be expected to be available in India.
Conclusion
The 2026 BMW iX3 heralds a new era for the brand, featuring the groundbreaking Neue Klasse platform and major improvements in electric vehicle technology. The next-gen iX3, with its improved range and charging capabilities as well as its refined yet futuristic design, is poised to make a strong impact in the EV market.
