Next-Gen Mercedes A-Class Replacement to Offer ICE & EV Power

Mercedes-Benz is set to replace the A-Class hatchback in 2028 with a new entry-level luxury model. Built on the versatile MMA platform, it will support both ICE and electric powertrains, targeting rivals like the BMW 1 Series, Audi A3, and Volkswagen’s upcoming ID. Golf.

Mercedes-Benz has formally sanctioned a prospective new hatchback to replace the soon-to-be-scrapped A-Class in some capacity, serving almost as an indirect successor to the A-Class.

The significance of this announcement lies in the fact that Mercedes' recent product emphasis has been heavily directed towards premium and high-margin products.

Interestingly, the fourth-generation A-Class hatchback was initially scheduled to be released earlier, but was later extended to 2028 due to uniform global demand and pressure from dealers.

Placed Against High-End Competitors

The vehicle will be positioned in the same price bracket as entry-level luxury and will compete directly with the BMW 1 Series and Audi A3.

Even in the electric version, it will be a competitor to the future Volkswagen ID. Golf also its the ability to provide not only the ICE but also the electric will provide this in the market at full strength without having to rely on the high expenses of developing a new single-platform EV model.

Ride based on Mercedes

The new hatch is being done on the basis of the Mercedes Modular Architecture (MMA), which will serve as a platform to mount several types of body styles and types of powertrains. It is this base that the next-gen CLA sedan, CLA estate, and future GLA and GLB SUVs are built on. This will result in making the hatchback the fifth in the understanding of body styles in the Mercedes line that is MMA-based.

Design and Dimensions

Although the official design sketches remain shrouded in secrets, the insiders indicate that the hatchback will have a traditional silhouette of the existing A-Class.

The dimensions, particularly the wheelbase and the track width, are likely to be those of the next-generation GLA to keep it familiar with the proportions, with the probable inclusion of contemporary features.

Strategic Significance

This is against the backdrop of Mercedes declining its global sales by 6 per cent in the first half of 2025, and its EV sales experienced a stiffer setback of 19 per cent. Providing ICE and EV options in a single model, Mercedes is setting the stage for balancing the demand among the customers and the emerging regulations and electrifying objectives.

This illustrates the niche nature of the A-Class hatchback in India, which, at present, sells only in AMG version alongside the adjacent A-Class limousine sedan. The new generation would potentially transform the entry-level luxury image of the brand across all parts of the globe.
