New BMW X5 to Launch in 2028 With 5 Powertrain Options

BMW has confirmed that the upcoming 2028 X5 will be its first model to feature five distinct powertrain choices — petrol, diesel, plug-in hybrid, battery electric, and a hydrogen fuel cell system. The hydrogen variant, developed in collaboration with Toyota, signals BMW’s push toward a more versatile and sustainable mobility future.

BMW is about to make history by releasing the new X5 in 2028, as it will be the first model to have five variants of powertrain offered in the brand. This will have the already known petrol and diesel engines, an electrified plug-in hybrid, a fully electric variant, and the highly expected hydrogen fuel cell-powered iX5.

Being powered by hydrogen, the new X5 will be the most versatile SUV in its category, as it can offer different approaches to cleaner mobility to its customers based on the technology available in the region and their own requirements.

The Hydrogen iX5: Co-Produced with Toyota

The centre of this innovation is the third-generation hydrogen fuel cell system (BMW-Toyota). The setup is more promising than its predecessors, having a smaller size and a higher potential owing to its proficiency as well as better energy consumption. This will imply an extended radius and enhanced functionality at the expense of sustainability.

The use of hydrogen is not limited to powering automobiles. It is also used as a storage facility of renewable energy that increases cycles of stability in the grid and further application of clean-power solutions on a global basis.

HyMoS Initiative: Transporting Hydrogen Mobility

BMW is supporting its hydrogen drive over the HyMoS (Hydrogen Mobility at Scale) initiative. This program concentrates on the developed ecosystems of the hydrogen refuelling and pilot projects that are already in force in Germany and France. These hubs will be expanded to additional large cities in the world in the long term, including passenger and commercial vehicles.

Why This Matters

As various regions adopt different approaches to decarbonisation, the multiple strategies that BMW used will mean the X5 is relatable across various markets. Hydrogen might be a viable option for the customer in areas where EV charging systems are not fully developed. To others, the decision of wanting to stick to traditional fuels, hybrids, or EVs offers no better chances of flexibility.

The new 2028 BMW X5 is becoming one of the most adaptable models in its branding path, which is going to combine luxury with innovative technologies and the ability to be sustainable.
