Mini Unveils Practical 5-Door Cooper Variant: More Space and Tech Upgrades

Mini has expanded its lineup with the introduction of the all-new, more practical 5-door variant of the Cooper, following the debut of the 2-door model. This new variant offers increased space and retains the familiar engine options. Although an official launch date for India is yet to be announced, Mini India has opened order books for other new models, indicating that the 5-door Cooper might arrive soon.

Enhanced Dimensions and Space

The new 5-door Cooper is designed to be a roomier version of the 3-door hatchback. Measuring just over 4 meters long, it provides 16 centimeters more space than the 3-door model and 3 centimeters more than the outgoing 5-door version. This translates to an additional 3.8 centimeters of legroom for rear passengers and a more practical cargo space of 275 liters.

Advanced Interior and Tech Features

The interior of the new Mini Cooper 5-door is not just about increased space; it also features significant tech upgrades. The redesigned cockpit includes a new OLED display positioned closer to the driver for easier access. This display, running on the latest MINI OS9, allows control of navigation, media, phone, and climate settings through touch or voice commands.

Mini enhances the user experience with seven unique "MINI experience modes." These modes use a projector behind the OLED display to transform the dashboard into vivid worlds of color and patterns, each with its own customized background.

Engine Options and Performance

Similar to the 3-door Cooper, the 5-door variant offers two gasoline engine choices:

  • Cooper C: 1.5-liter turbocharged three-cylinder engine producing 154 horsepower and 230 Nm of torque.

  • Cooper S: a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 204 horsepower and 300 Nm of torque.

Both engines send power to the front wheels, although the 5-door Cooper S has a slightly slower 0-to-100 kilometer per hour acceleration compared to the 3-door version.

Transmission and Production

Unlike the 3-door model, the new 5-door Cooper is only available with an automatic transmission, as Mini removed the manual option from the lineup last year. There will be no battery-electric version of the 5-door Cooper, with the Chinese-built Aceman EV filling that role in some markets.

Production of the 5-door Cooper will take place alongside the gasoline-powered versions at Mini's Oxford plant. This plant is undergoing adjustments to start production of the electric Cooper and Aceman in 2026. Additionally, the upcoming Mini Convertible, the last model to be revealed in the brand's lineup refresh, will also be built at Oxford.

The new Mini Cooper 5-door variant combines increased practicality with significant tech upgrades, making it a compelling choice for those looking for a spacious yet compact vehicle. With advanced features, more interior space, and robust engine options, the 5-door Cooper is set to appeal to a wide range of buyers. Keep an eye out for its official launch date in India as Mini continues to expand its lineup.
