Hatchbacks, once a staple choice for Indian car buyers, have seen a decline in both sales volume and consumer interest in recent years, largely due to the rising popularity of SUVs and crossovers. However, amidst this shifting automotive landscape, certain hatchback models continue to maintain their dominance in the market.
According to recent sales data for February 2024, Maruti WagonR emerged as the top-selling hatchback, reaffirming its position as a favoured choice among consumers. Maruti Suzuki, the Indo-Japanese automaker, reported sales of 19,412 units of the WagonR last month, marking a notable year-on-year growth of 15%. Notably, the WagonR also claimed the title of the best-selling passenger vehicle model for February.
Rank | Models | Jan 2024 | MoM change (%) | Feb 2024 | Feb 2023 | YoY change (%) |
---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
1 | Maruti Wagon R | 17,756 | 9.33% | 19,412 | 16,889 | 14.94% |
2 | Maruti Baleno | 19,630 | -10.76% | 17,517 | 18,592 | -6% |
3 | Maruti Swift | 15,370 | -14.35% | 13,165 | 18,412 | -28.50% |
4 | Maruti Alto | 12,395 | -5.42% | 11,723 | 18,114 | -35.28% |
5 | Tata Tiago | 6,482 | 7.17% | 6,947 | 7,457 | -6.84% |
6 | Hyundai i20 | 7083 | -30.16% | 4,947 | 9,287 | -45% |
Following closely behind, the Maruti Baleno secured the second position in the hatchback segment, with sales totalling 17,517 units. Despite a slight year-on-year decline of 6%, the Baleno continues to command a significant share of the market. In January 2024, Maruti dispatched 19,630 units of the premium hatchback across the country.
However, not all hatchbacks fared as well in the sales race. The Maruti Swift experienced a substantial year-on-year drop of 28.5%, with sales amounting to 13,165 units in February. This decline can be attributed to anticipation surrounding the imminent launch of a new generation model of the Swift.
Similarly, the Maruti Alto, a longstanding budget-friendly option for first-time car buyers, witnessed a significant decline in sales, with only 11,723 units sold in February. This marked a staggering 42% decrease compared to the same period last year when Maruti sold 21,411 units of the Alto.
Tata Motors made its presence felt in the hatchback segment with the Tiago, which recorded sales of 6,947 units in February 2024, reflecting a modest year-on-year decline of nearly 7%. However, the Tiago saw a 7% increase in month-on-month sales, indicating a potential uptick in consumer interest.
On the other hand, Hyundai's i20 experienced a sharp decline in sales, with only 4,947 units sold in February 2024, representing a substantial 45% decrease compared to the previous year. In January 2024, Hyundai registered a monthly volume of 7,083 units, indicating a 30% month-on-month decline.
Despite the challenges posed by evolving consumer preferences, certain hatchback models like the Maruti WagonR and Baleno continue to command significant market share, while others grapple with fluctuating sales figures. The automotive industry awaits further developments as manufacturers navigate changing trends and consumer demands.
