Kia Syros EV Caught Testing Ahead of Global Debut

Images have emerged of the first test of the next small electric SUV that Kia plans to introduce, a car that it is rumoured may be called the Syros EV. The EV is slated to be launched worldwide later this year and should ride on the success of its ICE sibling in India and aim at capturing the emerging entry-level Electric SUV market.

Kia Syros EV is the first glimpse of the upcoming Kia compact electric SUV, as it has been seen under testing. Hiding under extensive camouflage, this prototype was spotted charging first at an EV station, which suggests that already some real-world range tests are being performed.

Look and Feel Highlights

The upright fortress and blocky dimensions of the Syros EV pop out through the bulky wrap. Its boxy wheel arches, short overhangs and glasshouse height all make it seem like a functional, space-oriented design. The aero-style alloy wheels that are branded with the Kia emblem signal an efficiency-minded nature.

Vertically stacked headlamps are located on each side of the bumper at the front, whereas the rear has vertically positioned tail lamps at both sides and a flat tailgate. Its EV status is confirmed by a charging port that is mounted on its front-left fender.

Segment and Positioning

The Syros EV will be positioned below the Carens Clavis EV in the global range of Kia cars; it is to target buyers who need a compact electric crossover that is also spacious. It is supposed to specifically serve the urban and semi-urban market, where the most determining purchase parameters are the manoeuvrability and the cabin space.

Powertrain Expectations

Kia has not disclosed the technical information, but there are speculations that several battery pack options will be provided in the industry.

Its top-spec model was reported to achieve a driving distance of 300km to 400km with one charge. Such flexibility will enable Kia to attract low-income shoppers and those focused on long-range.

Launch and Competitors in the Market

The Syros EV will be introduced worldwide in the near future, and a launch in India may also happen shortly afterward. In showrooms, it will go head to head with vehicles such as the Tata Punch EV, MG Windsor EV and Citroen eC3, each jostling to take a leadership position in the fast-growing entry-level electric SUV segment.

The Syros being powered by the ICE is already popular in India owing to its spacious and practical cabin. This appeal would be even greater with the EV variant which can be offered as a solid entry into the relatively inexpensive EV sector.
