Long known as one of the most successful sedans in the world, the 12th-generation Toyota Corolla was first introduced in 2018 and was high time it received a radical change.
Toyota has not chosen to introduce a completely new generation, but instead, the 2026 model year is a major facelift. The first clear glimpse at such updates came a few days ago, thanks to the published information of the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) in China.
Exterior Designing – Sleeker and Cleaner
The facelift also brings in a more refined and contemporary look as opposed to the bold style of the previous model. With a new design motif based on the other Toyota models, such as the Prius and Camry, the Corolla receives a redesigned hammerhead-shaped front frame, a narrower central air opening, and a unique C-shaped light signature of LED lights.
The other external modifications are the L-shaped straddles of the fog lamps, dual-tone alloy wheels and a triangular extension on the rear quarter windows, which give minor dynamism to the profile.
In the rear, the sedan receives smoked tail lamps and a red trim, which makes the units physically relatable as well as adds to its sporty posture.
Potential Internal and Technology Improvements
Although MIIT papers did not reveal what would be inside, Toyota is likely to introduce improvements internally as well. It could be provided with a bigger 10.5-inch or even 12.3-inch infotainment screen, better graphics, OTA update, and voice-activated controls.
Better quality soft-touch materials, revised dashboard layout, and optional amenities such as a head-up display and ambient lights can also be included with the pack.
Powertrain Options are not new
In the case of China, the 2026 Corolla sedan should not get a change in the engine lineup. That includes:
1.5-litre NA petrol (121 hp, 148 Nm) with CVT
1.2-litre turbo petrol (116 hp, 185 Nm) with CVT
1.8-litre self-charging hybrid (122 hp combined) with e-CVT
The extension of the same options to other Asian markets, such as Malaysia, will still be to be determined.
Corolla’s India Story
Toyota Corolla Altis used to be a successful premium sedan in India, but in 2020, it was cancelled because of more stringent regulations and the increasing popularity of the SUV.
Although Toyota has not officially stated that it has any intentions of reintroducing the facelifted version in India, the global changes keep the Corolla as relevant as it has always been in those markets where the sedan still has a high demand.
