The Indian SUV and MPV market is poised for an exciting phase with several new and updated 7-seater vehicles set to launch soon. Among the notable mentions are the next-generation Kia Carnival and the all-new Hyundai Alcazar. Seven-seater cars, known for their spacious interiors, continue to be popular among large families in India. Here’s a closer look at the upcoming models that promise to redefine the segment.
New Kia Carnival
Kia is gearing up to launch the new Carnival in India during the festive season, with an expected starting price of around Rs 40 lakh (ex-showroom). The global version of this MPV premiered last year and boasts several improvements over its predecessor. Key updates include a revised rear bumper, a larger tiger-nose grille, L-shaped headlights, and LED daytime running lights. Globally, the Carnival is available in three engine options, but the India-spec model is likely to retain the 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel engine, delivering 200bhp and 400Nm of torque.
Inside, the Carnival is expected to feature enhanced amenities such as 12.3-inch twin curved infotainment and instrumentation screens, raising the bar for in-car technology and comfort. These updates are set to make the Carnival a strong contender in the premium MPV segment.
Next-Gen Hyundai Alcazar
The updated Hyundai Alcazar, following extensive testing, is expected to hit showrooms in the festive season around September-October. Although initially slated for a mid-2024 release, the launch was postponed to clear existing inventory. Spy photos reveal significant design revisions, aligning with the 2024 Creta, but with a larger, uniquely designed grille. Inside, the Alcazar could feature dual 10.25-inch screens for the instrument cluster and infotainment system, similar to the five-seat Creta, along with fresh upholstery to differentiate it further.
Mechanically, the new Alcazar will continue to offer the 1.5-litre turbo-petrol engine (158bhp/253Nm) and the 1.5-litre turbo-diesel engine (114.4bhp/250Nm), providing ample power and efficiency.
Kia EV9
Kia is likely to introduce the EV9 in India soon, marking its entry as the largest and most expensive vehicle in the company's lineup, with an estimated price of around Rs 1 crore (ex-showroom). The EV9 is expected to feature a 12.3-inch infotainment screen, a large sunroof, a heated steering wheel, ambient lighting, regenerative braking with paddle shifters, and USB charging ports.
Based on Kia’s E-GMP platform, the EV9 may come in two versions: a single-motor rear-wheel drive (RWD) model with 215bhp and a 76.1kWh battery offering a 541-kilometer range, and a dual-motor variant with a combined output of 380bhp. Detailed specifications will likely be revealed closer to the launch.
Jeep Meridian Facelift
The redesigned Jeep Meridian is expected to launch in India later this year. The new model will feature several cosmetic enhancements, including integrated DRLs in the headlights, a redesigned grille, new front and rear bumpers, fresh alloy wheels, and revised taillights. Additional exterior paint options will also be available.
The Meridian will continue to be powered by the 2-litre diesel engine paired with either a six-speed manual or a nine-speed automatic torque converter. The highest-end automatic versions will offer a four-wheel drive (4WD) option. A significant upgrade for the new Meridian will be the inclusion of Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), which could justify a premium price over the current model, starting at Rs 33.77 lakh (ex-showroom).
MG Gloster Facelift
MG is preparing to launch the facelifted Gloster in India soon, as evidenced by numerous spy shots. The updated SUV will likely feature a large three-slat grille, a split headlight design, redesigned alloy wheels, and reworked LED taillamps connected by a slim light bar. Interior updates are expected to include a digital instrument cluster, a large touchscreen infotainment system, ventilated and powered front seats, and wireless smartphone connectivity.
The Gloster will retain its current 2-litre diesel turbo/twin-turbo engines, available with both 4X2 and 4X4 configurations. The facelifted model could see a price increase over the existing iteration, which starts at Rs 38.80 lakh, due to these enhancements.
In summary, the upcoming 7-seater cars in India promise a blend of modern design, advanced features, and robust performance. Whether you're looking for an MPV like the Kia Carnival or a stylish SUV like the Hyundai Alcazar, there are plenty of exciting options on the horizon.
