Toyota Fortuner and Legender Get Neo Drive Variants with 48V Mild-Hybrid Tech

Toyota India has unveiled new Neo Drive variants of the Fortuner and Fortuner Legender in India, featuring 48V mild-hybrid technology in its debut. With improvements to fuel economy, drivability, and the introduction of segment-first technology, the changes for the Neo Drive Fortuners aim to combine power and greener technology.

In a remarkable move towards more sustainable mobility, Toyota Kirloskar Motor has launched the Neo Drive variants of Toyota Fortuner and Fortuner Legender in India, and these are now the first Fortuner models in India to feature any kind of hybrid system with 48V mild-hybrid technology

Fortuner's Initial Mild-Hybrid tech for Improved efficiency

The Neo Drive variants of the Fortuner feature a Toyota 2.8-litre diesel engine paired with a 48V lithium-ion battery, alongside a belt-integrated starter generator. In addition to enhancing low-end torque, Toyota's 48V mild-hybrid system also improves fuel economy and it runs quieter and smoother.

The powertrain also works with a regenerative braking system, which harnesses energy normally lost while braking by recharging the battery at the same time, in addition to helping with effective braking distance and performance. Part of the design considerations for the Neo Drive powertrain was the system's Smart Idle Start-Stop which switches the engine off at idle to conserve fuel consumption and produce less CO2 emissions.

Pricing and Positioning

  • Toyota Fortuner Neo Drive: ₹44.77 lakh

  • Toyota Fortuner Legender Neo Drive: ₹50.09 lakh

(All prices are ex-showroom).*

The Fortuner Neo Drive fits just below the performance-focused GR-S variant, while the Legender Neo Drive now fits above in its hierarchy.

  • Wireless smartphone charger for added convenience

  • Neo Drive badging on the rear to distinguish the variant

The Multi-Terrain Select system continues to offer advanced driving modes that adjust throttle, brakes, and traction based on different terrains, keeping the Fortuner’s rugged credentials intact.

Official Word from Toyota

In a remark on the introduction, Varinder Wadhwa, Vice President of Sales-Service-Used Car Business, Toyota India, said:

"The introduction of the new Neo Drive 48V grade in both models marks yet another milestone in our journey. As a segment-first, it underscores our commitment to delivering ever-better cars that align with evolving customer lifestyles, while also reinforcing Toyota’s multi-pathway approach toward carbon neutrality. Through practical, future-ready mobility solutions, we strive to enhance customer value and contribute meaningfully to a more sustainable tomorrow."

With the legendary toughness of the Fortuner now underpinned by cleaner technology, Toyota is making another definitive move toward a greener future, and plans to set the pace in India's premium SUV segment.
