It is no surprise that Mahindra is facing order backlogs, after all the demand for their cars has been on a steep rise. However, Mahindra has been making a lot of effort to lower the order backlog which has hampered the sales of several of its best-selling models.
The waiting time for the Thar has been slightly shortened because of an increase in production and the average monthly delivery. This strategy has notably decreased the waiting period for the Thar 4x4 variants, though the 4x2 variants still face considerable delays.
Read through the article to gain an insight into the waiting period of all variants and models:
Thar 4x2 waiting period
A 1.5-liter diesel engine with 300 Nm of torque and 118 horsepower powers the Thar 4x2. The Thar diesel 4x2 has simply a 6-speed manual gearbox instead of an automated one. The 2.0-liter turbo-petrol engine, which is exclusive to the 6-speed torque converter automatic transmission, is carried over from the Thar 4x4.
The Thar 4x2 is priced between Rs. 11.25 lakh and Rs. 14 lakh. This is significantly less than the 4x4 versions since the 2WD is taxed at a lower rate than sub-4 million vehicles, which means that demand for it is also stronger.

In contrast, the waiting period for the petrol 4x2 versions is substantially shorter, with a maximum of 4 months; both have decreased by around one month as of February 2024. There is only one hardtop model for the Thar 4x2.
Thar 4x4 waiting period
There are two engine options for the 4x4: a 2.0-liter turbo-petrol with 152 horsepower and a 2.2-liter diesel with 132 horsepower. A 6-speed torque converter automatic or a 6-speed manual gearbox is available for both engines. A manual-shift 4x4 transfer case and a manual-locking differential are also included with the 4x4.
The current range of prices for the Thar 4x4 is Rs 14.30 lakh-17 lakh for petrol and Rs 14.85 lakh-17.60 lakh for diesel variants.
Waiting Period: All variants of the Thar, including the petrol, diesel, hardtop, and soft-top versions, have an average waiting period of 6 weeks to 2 months for the 4x4 models. This is a reduction from the 3 months that it was in February 2024.
