To increase its appeal, Skoda is currently testing a CNG-powered variant of the Kylaq SUV.
The CNG version will probably come with a 1.0L TSI engine and manual transmission and use a retrofit kit that Skoda has approved.
For the Kylaq sub-compact SUV, which has grown to be one of the brand's best-selling vehicles in the nation, Skoda Auto India is investigating the idea of providing a CNG fuel alternative. There are rumors that the business would use a dealer-installed retrofit kit instead of creating a specialized factory-fitted CNG model from the ground up.
Skoda would approve these kits and cover them under warranty, giving customers assurance about their longevity and support.
This strategy could help Skoda compete with competitors that already have CNG options in their lineups and is similar to tactics used by other Indian automakers.
Expectations for Engine and Performance
Currently available with both manual and automatic transmissions, the Kylaq has a 1.0-liter turbo-petrol engine that generates about 114 horsepower and 178 Nm of torque. It is anticipated that Skoda will stick to a manual transmission for the CNG variant in order to save money and simplify things.
Similar to the majority of CNG cars, there will probably be a small decrease in power and torque when compared to the regular gasoline model, as well as a slight reduction in trunk capacity because of the installation of the CNG tank.
Compact SUVs in India are in high demand for vehicles with lower operating costs, and CNG is becoming a more appealing choice in light of shifting fuel prices and environmental concerns. It makes sense for Skoda to go in this way in order to increase its customer base and maintain its competitiveness, as rivals like Maruti Suzuki, Hyundai, and Tata already provide CNG versions of popular models.
Additionally, the business recently added new Classic+ and Prestige+ trim levels to the Kylaq portfolio. It also plans additional variations, such as a Sportline that will be released later in 2026, demonstrating Skoda's intention to maintain the model's appeal and freshness.
The Kylaq CNG's complete engineering specifications, debut date, and price have not yet been made public. According to the rumours, a potential launch window for late 2026 might coincide with one of India's festive sales seasons, which is a great time to introduce new models.
