Renault’s Strategic Move to Acquire Full Ownership in India
In a major announcement, Renault Group recently shared last month that it is acquiring the remaining 51% of Renault-Nissan Automotive India Private Ltd (RNAIPL). The acquisition would allow Renault to have greater control of its Chennai plant which has been operating since 2010.
The Chennai plant has served as a strategic asset in aligning Renault with the Renault-Nissan alliance. Previously, Renault held a 30% share of the plant. While the factory was under ownership of Nissan, Nissan was preparing essentially to outsource Renault by holding a 70% ownership stake.
However, Renault and Nissan will come to terms under a contract in 2023 in which Nissan will accept a minority stake of 51% ownership. Renault and Nissan agreed to provide $600 million dollars to develop six all-new passenger vehicles for the Indian marketplace.
Under the latest modifications of the alliance, they have again relaxed the cross ownership stipulations, where the two manufacturers have ownership levels of a minimum of ten percent (down from 15 percent). This allows them to share resources and permits a joint-venture to be established with ownership arrangements that have been relaxed. Along with the eventual joint venture, Renault is also looking to manufacture a compact electric vehicle for Nissan, with production at the Chennai factory based on the strategic importance of the alliance in the Indian automotive space.
The Summer camp and deal announcements by Renault India illustrate that Renault is not just serious about building the brand's presence in the world's fourth largest automotive market, they are also serious about building relationships with emerging customers.
