Maruti Swift Sales Dip Despite New Generation Launch
The highly anticipated fourth-generation Maruti Swift, launched in May 2024, has seen a surprising dip in sales. November 2024 sales for the Swift totaled 14,737 units, marking a 4 percent decline compared to the same period last year when the third-generation model was nearing the end of its lifecycle. While initial sales figures for the new model showed promise, interest appears to have waned in the months since its launch.
Sales Comparison: New Swift vs. Previous Generation
The third-gen Swift facelift averaged 17,186 units from June to November 2023, while the latest iteration managed only 15,773 units in the same period this year, an 8.2 percent drop. Although there were months of positive growth, such as a 10.46 percent increase in September, consistent dips in other months contributed to the overall decline.
Baleno Outsells Swift Despite Lower Averages
A significant factor affecting Swift’s sales could be the rising popularity of the Maruti Baleno. In November 2024, Baleno recorded wholesales of 16,293 units, a remarkable 26 percent increase year-on-year. Though the Swift maintains a higher monthly average (15,773 vs. 13,893 units), the Baleno’s recent performance reflects a shift in consumer preference.
The Baleno, positioned as a premium hatchback, offers buyers more features, greater cabin space, and a more powerful 90hp engine compared to the Swift’s new 82hp unit. Coupled with a minor price difference and the premium Nexa dealership experience, the Baleno is emerging as a strong contender.
Challenges for Hatchbacks in the Indian Market
The dip in Swift’s sales is part of a broader trend in the hatchback segment. Popular models like the Maruti Wagon R and Alto K10 also reported year-on-year declines of 16 percent and 8 percent, respectively, in November 2024. This is indicative of the growing dominance of SUVs, which are steadily capturing market share.
However, not all hatchbacks are struggling. Hyundai’s Grand i10 Nios registered a 20 percent increase in November sales, showing that opportunities remain for compelling offerings in this segment.
Future Outlook for the Swift
For the Swift to regain its popularity, Maruti Suzuki may need to revisit its pricing strategy and further enhance the vehicle’s performance and features. As the market shifts, staying competitive will require a blend of innovation and customer-centric value.
