Volkswagen Tera Compact Suv What We Know So Far

Volkswagen Tera Compact SUV: What We Know So Far

Based on the Skoda Kylaq, The Volkswagen Tera, a sub-4 meter compact SUV, has been spotted testing in Argentina. Slated for an international debut in 2025, the Tera is anticipated to hit Indian roads by late 2025 or early 2026.

Here’s a detailed look at what makes this upcoming SUV a promising addition to Volkswagen’s lineup.

Design and Platform

The Tera is built on the MQB A0 IN platform, shared with popular models like the Skoda Kushaq, Kylaq, and Volkswagen Taigun. The design language leans more towards a crossover than a traditional SUV, giving it the stance of a raised hatchback.

Key differentiating factors include:

  • Slightly altered sheet metal designs.

  • Unique interior trims.

  • The iconic VW badge for brand distinction.

Powertrain Options

The Tera will borrow its engines and gearboxes from the Skoda Kylaq, ensuring tried-and-tested performance. Expected powertrain options include:

1.0L TSI Petrol Engine

  • Power: 114 BHP

  • Torque: 178 Nm

  • Transmission Options: 6-speed manual or torque converter automatic

1.5L TSI Petrol Engine (Speculative)

  • Volkswagen may offer a 1.5L turbocharged engine to cater to driving enthusiasts.

Both engines promise a balance of performance and efficiency, ensuring mass appeal.

Why the Tera Could Succeed

  1. Minimal Development Costs: With significant localization and shared parts with the Kylaq, Taigun, and Virtus, Tera’s production cost will be relatively low.

  2. Aspirational Appeal: The sub-4 meter compact SUV segment is highly aspirational. Volkswagen’s brand cachet allows it to command a premium price while offering value through features and design.

  3. Export Opportunities: Unlike the Ameo, which was India-specific, Tera’s crossover appeal, and sub-4 meter dimensions make it a strong candidate for global exports, especially in markets requiring left-hand drive variants.

Lessons Learned from the Ameo

Volkswagen’s previous attempt at a sub-4 meter sedan, the Ameo, was marred by poor sales due to limited space, a weak petrol engine, and lack of export potential.

However, the Tera offers a completely different proposition:

  • Lower development costs due to shared components.

  • A growing SUV market segment with higher price flexibility.

  • Broader export potential, increasing its market appeal.

Expected Pricing and Rivals

Given its positioning, the Volkswagen Tera will likely have a starting price of around ₹8 lakh and could go up to ₹15 lakh for higher trims. It will compete with popular models like:

  • Hyundai Venue

  • Maruti Brezza

  • Tata Nexon

Launch Timeline

Volkswagen India is expected to make an official announcement about the Tera in the coming months, with an end of 2025 or early 2026 launch anticipated.

The Volkswagen Tera promises to be a compelling addition to the Indian compact SUV market, combining practicality, aspirational design, and export viability to carve out its niche.
