New FASTag Rules Take Effect – What You Need to Know

The latest FASTag regulations introduce stricter payment verification, a grace period for recharges, and penalties for blacklisted accounts. Here's how it affects highway users.

The National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) has rolled out new FASTag rules, effective immediately. These updates aim to improve toll payment efficiency, reduce fraudulent transactions, and ensure smoother highway travel.

However, the changes also introduce stricter regulations that require vehicle owners to keep their FASTag accounts in check to avoid penalties and transaction failures.

What is FASTag and How Does It Work?

FASTag is an electronic toll collection system that uses Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology to enable cashless toll payments. The FASTag sticker, placed on a vehicle's windshield, is scanned at toll booths, automatically deducting the toll amount from a linked bank account, prepaid wallet, or payment app.

Key Changes in FASTag Regulations

1. Blacklisted FASTags – No Transactions Allowed

  • If a FASTag is blacklisted, hotlisted, or has a low balance for more than 60 minutes before reaching a toll booth, the transaction will be declined.

  • If the FASTag remains inactive or blacklisted for 10 minutes after scanning, the payment will also be rejected.

  • If both conditions are met, the system will decline the transaction with error code 176, and the vehicle owner will have to pay double the toll fee as a penalty.

2. Grace Period for Recharges

  • Users now get a 70-minute window before reaching a toll booth to fix their FASTag status.

  • If a FASTag recharge is done within 10 minutes of a transaction attempt, users may qualify for a penalty refund and pay only the standard toll fee.

3. Delayed Transactions – Additional Charges

  • If a toll transaction is processed more than 15 minutes after passing the toll reader, users may be charged extra fees.

4. Cooling Period for Chargebacks

  • If a blacklisted or low-balance FASTag results in an incorrect toll deduction, banks can only raise a chargeback request after a 15-day cooling period.

What These Rules Mean for FASTag Users

With these updates, FASTag users must be more vigilant about maintaining their account balance and transaction status to avoid penalties and disruptions.

  • No last-minute recharges – If a FASTag has been blacklisted for over 60 minutes, recharging it just before reaching the toll will not help.

  • Penalty refund possible – If a recharge is completed within 10 minutes of scanning, users may qualify for a refund and avoid paying double toll charges.

  • Stricter transaction monitoring – FASTag users need to ensure their tag remains active to avoid delays, extra fees, or transaction failures.

How to Avoid FASTag Issues

To ensure a hassle-free journey, FASTag users should:

  • Ensure your FASTag wallet has sufficient balance.

  • Regularly check FASTag status to avoid blacklisting.

  • Monitor transaction times to catch any deduction delays.

  • Keep the FASTag active to prevent rejection at toll booths.

Conclusion

The new FASTag rules reinforce the importance of timely recharges and account maintenance. While these measures aim to enhance efficiency and reduce congestion at toll plazas, highway users must be proactive in managing their FASTag accounts to avoid unexpected penalties and travel disruptions.
